i got my mini schnauzer from a breeder in selden... i tried to adopt from the brookhaven pound but they didn't have any small dogs and I am in a condo...
i would have loved to have adopted- the puppy stage was torture...lol

North Shore Animal League! I just feel wrong buying a dog, especially when so many need homes.

OH YEAH! I'm not a dog person, however, all 7 of my cats came from North shore Animal League. I can't see buying a pet. I'd rather get one from North Shore & make a donation to them.

Just so you all know you can get small dogs at the shetlers. There are not as many so you do have to be more patient but they are there.

we rescued two puppies, including a goldendoodle. With every dog you adopt, you rescue more since the adoption fee goes to the rescue group and lets them save more dogs.

We had fantastic experiences both times

We adopted our pit bull mix from NSAL he was 4 mos old when we got him. He is truly a great dog!

I'd adopt a puppy but not an adult dog only because I have a young child and so many rescued animals have been abused I'd worry about their disposition. Then again I'd never leave my little one alone with any dog but I so love them and hope we can get one when she's older. All my pups growing up came from North Shore Animal League and I am not personally in favor of pet stores since most come from puppy mills. Petfinder seems to the best all around organization for rescue and I have a lot of friends who have gotten their pets through them. Good luck

I rescued my dog, Clara, when she was 3-4 months old. Certainly still a puppy!

We got her from Last Chance Rescue in Southampton.

i'm just going to echo the sentiment and say ADOPT, and the best place is PETFINDER.COM

we got our Yorkie from petfinder, through a rescue in Brooklyn. He was an adult but we have friends who found a puppy.

take your time to find the right dog for you and MAKE SURE you introduce your current dog to the new possibility to make sure its a good fit! good luck!

My sister found both her rescues through petfinder.com. They were both 2 years old when she got them (6 months apart) and are awesome. Since they were a bit older and had had puppies, they were much calmer than puppies and mostly house broken (and even knew some commands!).

I can only recommend adoption. So many doggies with no homes!!!

It is horrible that pits are given such a bad name and discriminated against. They are the best dogs. I do not think I will ever own a dog that is not a pit. They are the most loyal dog that you can own!

btw... I love the name Kane.

Ditto's. I recently had a 6-8 month? stafford terrier (which is technically a pit) follow me home a month or so ago. I tried to find the owner, it didn't have a chip.. and since I already have 2 dogs and a cat, I couldn't keep it. Luckily, it was such an amazing dog that a guy in Petco gave me his number and eventually wound up with the dog.
