I think that I like the 'bird cage' idea. Did anyone do this or have any other good ideas? Thanks!!

I am using boxes that look like a cake! I am not having the guests deposit the cards there. The guests will hand the cards to me and I will put them in the box. My sister used a basket but you never know - someone might steal a card.

I didn't want to do the birdcage because I was afraid of people taking cards out and walking away with them (I was SO paranoid) and wanted the cake shaped hat boxes...but ran out of time to make one...I ended up using the basket that my sister made that held my shower favors....held all the cards and it was easy to carry at then end of the night.

I used a birdcage that I got from my florist. Once the cards were in there, it was not easy to get them out unless you opened the door to the cage.

I haven't been to too many weddings.. is this the custom? What's with these 'money bag' purses they have? Do you greet people at the reception and they give you cards as you walk around? Or is it more common with the birdcage idea?

I am using a real mailbox. FI's grandfather used to have a metal shop and he made a metal mailbox. So I gave my aunt the mailbox to decorate. When she is done, I will post a pic.

i heard that lilian vernon has a nice cake box for the cards and supposedly it's cheap..i might go for that but i'm not sure of the dimensions..i wouldn't want it to be too big or too small.

nylisa - they used a mailbox at the wedding i went to last night. it was really cute. they had it kind of behind the bride and groom's table, so people gave the envelopes to the bride and groom and they in turn put them in the mailbox.
i guess i'm using the cake box because my FMIL bought it for me when we got engaged. not sure though. i'm also paranoid about having all the gifts sitting on a table

Lorena, thanks. I am actually going to put it on our table so that everyone can see what a beautiful job my aunt did and so that FI's family can see the mailbox.

I am making a card box that looks like a wedding cake.. I am actually going to make one for my FSIL and hope to replicate (to the best of my ability) her cake.. I'll post pics when Im done
I had the birdcage behind our table so if I was not at my table, my guests put it in the cage. It worked out nicely. I was afraid of using a basket or mailbox because anyone could go in and take a card..ya nver know...

When people handed me a bunch, throughout reception, I gave them to my mom or aunt, whoever was seated ayt the moment and they put it in a bag at their table, neither was away at same time! This is what happends when you have a paranoid family!
