Unless you are a President's daughter you should not have a black tie optional wedding. It will make your guests feel like the must rent a tux or buy a long evening gown just to attend. Because let's be honest....who wants to be the guy in a suit if everyone else is in a tux? It causes your guests unnecessary financial costs as well as stress. I think you may want everyone to think your wedding is super extra fancy, but you can do that without imposing on your guests IMO.

From what I've read and heard, it is 'officially' in bad taste to dictate dress on the invitation. It may be OK to put it on the reception card as you're suggesting, in which case it should go on the bottom right of the card.
You may want to forego including this altogether, and just count on the style of the invitation, time and location of the reception, word of mouth, and/or your wedding website (if you've got one) to communicate the appropriate dress.
It's a tough call, I know.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies, but I found it on Crane's anyway. It is lower right hand corner for those of you who need it.
We are having a formal affair so black tie is going on there. I didn't realize that you had to be the president's daughter to have a black tie affair.

Neither did I, We are getting married on New Years Eve and have been asked by people who we are inviting if they can wear a tux that night. I don't see what the big deal is. If people was to get dressed up I am all for it.

Re: Where do you put Black Tie Optional on the reception card?
Personal opinion, I would state it
'Black Tie Invited'
'Optional' sounds like you can't make up your mind. 'Invited' means if you have a tux, feel free to wear it because others might.
If you said Black Tie Preferred, then I would say that is imposing on your guests.

Saying Black Tie Optional is in Bad taste????? You gotta be kidding me!!!!! That's such BS!
I think saying just 'Black Tie' on your invite and not saying 'perfered' or 'optional' is in bad taste. It leaves your guest with no other option then to wear a tux.
If you want ppl to wear black tie, the two choices that are appropriate are Black Tie Prefered or Black Tie Optional.
We put Black Tie Optional on our invites and it's placed on the bottom left corner!

There is a difference.... black tie OPTIONAL is not in bad taste... it is optional and many peopel do just wear suits and don't feel pressured.. it is just saying you can dress up as much as you want
black tie maybe a little much but not if you know your guests... it dependsa
when you are paying over $50,000 for a wedding i think it is your choice if you want people to dress up
and especially a saturday night wedding... black tie optional is very common

Re: Where do you put Black Tie Optional on the reception card?
lol see that is interesting - Lion in the Sun - said NOT to use Optional because people these days don't know how to dress for sat night weddings - and if you use optional you will get people very dressed down - they said use Black tie - IF you want all guys in tuxes - but preferred - lets people know you want them dressed BUT gives them the out to wear a suit if they do not wish to rent - it basically tells the ladies more of the dress - with preferred you will only get a few who will come in tuxes - depending on your group. I see nothing wrong with it - look if people dont like it then they don't have to come - right- especially since they don't have to wear a tux unless you say just say black tie.

I agree... I am putting preferred... I think it's nice to give OOT and whoever doesn't own a tux a choice... But it also let's them know it is a formal affair, and I am by no means a president's daughter...

This is my fear. I don't want to put black tie invited, b/c its not that formal, only groomsna & dads will wear tuxes & thats' fine, they'll stand out, but I have been to several weddign wearign soem of my friends just wear skirts & sweaters or blouses, which I thought was inappropriate.
I guess in the grand scheme of things, its not a bid deal, but how do you indicate, ' no bsuiness casual attire'
and to answer the original question, go with what Crane's says.
