DH and I would like to give an older, indoor kitty a home for the holidays. We're thinking North Shore Animal League.
Any other suggestions ladies? We want to adopt from the most humane, responsible and compassionate agency.

You could also check with Bide-a-Wee.

Re: Where should I get my kitty
I would skip NSAL - their practices are questionable.
Kent animal shelter out in Riverhead is great - they have an entire room of adult cats.
Really, any local animal shelter would be great - as well as Bide-a-Wee.

Colleen, what is it about NSAL that is questionable?

I totally second Little Shelter!!! they are very humane...(I volunteered as a dog walker one summer) the cat room is actually great...the cats (that are friendly) roam around in a huge playpen together!!! with climbing toys and scratching posts...this is really good if you have another pet...or want to get another one eventually
what I have heard from DH (was a vet tech for 3 years) is that NSAL is not kill-free he said they are way overcrowded and put the sicker/older dogs to sleep pretty quickly...
this was also early 90s...things may have changed...and knowing this would also make me want to run there and rescue the poor things!!!

I've heard the same as Erika. What I hears was that they transport the dogs & cats to local kill-shelters.
My other issue with them is that with the overpopulation of dogs and cats, they choose to BUY puppies from puppy mills in order to cater to demand. I dont find third reputable or honest. A simple google search will inform you of what exactly a puppy mill is and why it is a wrong/bad thing.

Re: Where should I get my kitty
Hershey (my avatar) is from NSAL. A work friend adopted her and she destroyed their house (NASL neglected to tell them she was deaf or didn't check her to find out). Anyway, work friend could not keep her (his wife was ready to kill her - Hershey liked her shoes apparently) and I took her. So I have mixed feelings about them.

Oh, no, I know what a puppy mill is but didn't think NSAL was associated with them....

Re: Where should I get my kitty
julybride444 FM!!!!
My FI's hospital has been housing and taking care of an adult orange cat, Stimpy. His owners, after years of having him decided they would rather euthanize him than treat him for his infection....FI refused to euthanize him, so the family signed Stimpy over.
I feel so bad for this cat because he had a family for years, and they just gave him up!!!
If ANYONE is intereted in him, please FM me!

FI treated him with antibiotics, and his infection has been gone for a long time.

Re: Where should I get my kitty
You'd be surprised how many people are like that.
My FI has a second adult cat living at the hospital who belonged to a family for a long time...they decided they didn't want him anymore!
If anyone would like to adopt these cats (there's no fee, it would be totally free, and I'm sure on all future vet bills FI would give you a very nice % off) please FM me.
Tonight I'm going to the hosptial and taking photos of these cuties and will post them.
