Re: where to eat in the city...
what kind of food? it's hard to give a suggestion without any types of food ideas or what area of the city you want.
personally, I love calle ocho (latin fusion food) on the upper west (on columbus and 81st), son cubano on 14th stree in the meatpacking district (tough to get in there though w/o a reservation, but you can try as a walk in), max brenners in union square across from the movie theater has good meals, but even more amazing desserts, or you could try Sala in the east village for tapas. there is also an egyptian restaurant called casa la femme north on 1st and 58th. Mizu is good for sushi - i think it's on 28th stret & 5th ave. but not sure of exact location.
you may want to visit newyork.citysearch.com or chowhound.com for some ideas.

Re: where to eat in the city...
Sambuca on W. 72nd and C. Park West for family style GREAT italian and a nice place you can talk
Spice for Thai but NOT the one on University Place (you won't be able to hear yourself think) - the one on the upper east, you can find it on citysearch.com or the Spice website if you google it.
Cafe Pane e Cioccolato is an adorable cafe where you can definitely talk and it's in Greenwich Village on Waverly Place
Mexican Radio on Cleavland Place (around Lafeyette and Spring) is THE BEST mexiccan!

Ruby Foos on 72nd is really fun and very affordable - there's also one in Times Square
Dos Caminos or Salute!
Trendy places: Tao or Vong - east side so it's more convenient for ur friend
Go to 230 Fifth (rooftop) for drinks - it's really nice out!
Have fun!
