Where to live after the wedding. Long

Where to live after the wedding. Long

Ok so here is goes. My FI and I are not rich people (as is most of us) and Im getting very anxious and frustrated with deciding what to do.

Right now we live in an apartment building, which is a very nice one bedroom, but is a little pricey. When the lease is up (two months after our wedding) the rent will probably go up. I do not want to pay the increase so we have no choice but to not sign another lease. I also want to try and have kids soon after getting married. I will be 32 this year and FI will be 35, so we are not getting any younger. The thing is this one bedroom apartment will not cut it. Especially, if we have kids.

Anyway, the reason why im torn is because a house on long island is just way to expensive for our income. So what I was thinking of doing is (1) build a dormer on my parents house, which will probably be two bedrooms, plus they have a pool and a decent yard for my dog or (2) move out of state, which I am willing to do. The only problem is my FI. He never gives me an answer and seems as if he only wants a house in due time. But I don’t really feel like having a kid at age 35. I can understand him not wanting to live above my parents because sometimes I think of it and it scares me, but they are not that bad really, plus they adore him. But he also complains about moving out of state because he is scared to find a new job. Plus im sure he doesn’t want to be away from family, which is the same reason im frowning upon it.

Moving in with my parents seems to be the best thing until we are able to get back on our feet and save some more money. Plus, my mom is willing to watch our kids part-time (provided we have them) and will be a lot easier for us and for my little dog. We would just have to work out the details with my parents when I comes to moving out.

I guess I just need some opinions and need to know what other couples did.
TIA

First of all, . You will get through all this!
DH and I went through something very similar. Our lease was up the weekend we got married! We were able to work out with our landlord to do a six moth lease then go month to month after that (we just have to give them 60 days). Well, the six months have come and gone and we are still there! We have been looking around to buy a place but haven't found our 'home' just yet.
Are you only looking on LI? What about Queens or even the Bronx (like Riverside)? Where do you both work?
We both work in Manhattan so we are looking in NJ, LI, Westchester, basically everywhere!

We bought a condo. I know personally I could not and would not live that close to either of our parents. We would inevitably see them often, and I think that would put more of a stress on our relationship. Plus, our privacy is so important to me so I really wouldn't want them either hearing us or even seeing when we are coming and going.

I don't know of a good solution. We also talk of moving to NJ, where houses are cheaper and yet it is still only an hour or two from here.

Dh and me moved out of state, we know live in Miami and it's great, a lot cheaper. If we stayed in NY we knew it was going to take us a long time to buy, and the only option was to stay at my mom's house meanwhile; so instead we moved 3 days after the wedding and it really was the best choice.

You need to make a list of the pros/cons of each and decide what is most important to you.

What will your parents say if you want to move out in 5 years? All of it needs to be talked about and decided before you can make any real decision.

DH and I are close to the same situation. But we cannot move out of state b/c of a new job DH started. We will most likely dormer my MIL house b/c it is half the price of buying your own house.

Do you want to be a SAHM when/if you have children? Right now for DH and I this is the only way I could and we could still live a comfortable life.

FM if you want to compare notes
