Where to live in Brooklyn???

Where to live in Brooklyn???

A girl I work with is moving from CO to NY to go to school at LIU but she doesn't know much about where to live.

She needs to live somewhere safe but affordable and probably not too far of a commute.

Or can anyone recommend any agencies or brokers to go through to help her rent an apartment?

Thanks. I always lived on LI so I don't know much.

I used to work with a lot of people who lived in Park Slope. Incidentally, my dad grew up in Park Slope and his cousins still live there. I heard it went from a nice Italian/Irish family-type neighborhood, to Yuppie-ville. Very nice brownstones and such

w-burg, greenpoint, (northside) cobble hill (a little $$$$ though)...

How much does she want to spend? 1 br? 2br?

Assuming she will be working in the city, how long does she want her commnute to be? I am in Bay Ridge, and it takes me an hour to get to work. The going rate for my area is 1200 a month, and more as you get closer to the city.

Well she will be a FT pharmacy student and working as well but probably not making very much so probably on the $-$$ side would be better rent wise. It's just her so even a studio would work.
We have warned her that your money doesn't get you as far in NY as it will in CO for an apartment.

Thanks!!

Marine Park and Mill basin are nice areas. Other areas have changed a lot! I used to live in Canarsie and when I go back there it just is not the same

Hm....Is she going to the Brooklyn campus of LIU? Thats Fort Greene/Downtown Brooklyn. It is sort of up and coming, so she might find a good deal on a studio. Try the Daily News and NY Times website.

I grew up in Canarsie, and it is sooooo different from what it used to be. I loved it when I was a kid.

I actually live in Downtown Brooklyn (in the Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens) area. I love it here; excellent location and very easily accessible to Manhattan (we are right over the Bklyn bridge). I highly recommend it BUT this area has gotten really pricey!!!!! We have a nice size space in a brownstone for a great deal but it needs a lot of work (we are renting so don't mind). There are deals of this nature in nice areas of Brooklyn but it is a search!! Brooklyn has gotten pretty pricey over the last years, especially in the desirable neighborhoods. Williamsburg and Park Slope are also nice areas but pricey.

I live in Bay Ridge but grew up in Park Slope/ Windsor Terrace are. Really nice areas and convenient for city commuting but very pricey. $$$ In Bay Ridge you can get an apt but the prices vary. I have friends that pay $8oo/850 for a bedroom while others pay 1,000 for a 1 bedroom. 2 bedrooms can run 1100- 1400, 3 bedrooms 1500+. It can depend on the streets. The prices seem to rise as you can closer to the Verrazano Bridge.
It's a great area though for shopping, dining, or going for a drink.

Dyker Heights is very nice too.

I lived in Park Slope when I first moved to NYC from TN. I always felt safe and enjoyed my time there.

i live in brooklyn heights, in a studio and pay $1200 a month. i love this area!!! it's very safe and in a great location. if the heights are too expensive, downtown brooklyn is closeby and a bit more reasonable. i think park slope is probably the best!! lots of great restaurants and bars. my cousin lives in a 2 bedroom in windsor terrace and pays (i think) $1200 altogether (600 each). that's also a nice area.

tell her to check out this website:
http://www.ihouse-nyc.org/index.html

it's housing for graduate students. the website says it's houseing for international students, but about 30% is allocated for domestic students.

good luck!

Williamsburg is the best. but its expensive.
FAST commute!
park slope is nice, but its so far away ... it takes forever to get to the city from there.

Re: Where to live in Brooklyn???

If she is on a budget then 'brownstone brooklyn' and b-burg are probably out of the question.

I'd recommend Kensington - it's 2 stops from Park Slope/Windsor Terrace, it's safe, not expensive. Kind of boring area but that's probably why it's much less $$$. I used to live there and I really liked it.
