I would really like to learn how to make baby blankets, booties, sweaters those types of things for my DD on the way and as gifts.
Where would I begin to learn how to knit? Anyone could reccomend maybe a book, what I would need what I should do as a basic to get the hang of it?
Thanks

Re: Where/How to begin learning how to Knit?
There are several teach yourself to knit books at AC Moore and Michaels that usually come with a starter set of needles. That is how I taught myself to crochet. Good luck!

I had gotten a kit called 'I Taught Myself to Crochet,' but they also have an 'I Taught Myself Knitting.' The crochet book came with several patterns -including a hooded blanket for baby. I'll admit it took some time to get a handle on the pictures and pick up what they meant - and my first couple of scarves are awful! But with practice, it has gotten easier and more fluid.

Re: Where/How to begin learning how to Knit?
I just taught myself to knit a couple months ago. I had a few books (sort of encyclopedia of needlework), and a book from LionBrand that hada how to and some patterns in it. It took some getting used to, but now I'm making a cable sweater. It can be hard trying to figure out the pictures. Here are some links that have videos.
thanks mandm and tracyg. Im going to pick a book or two and check out the online videos.
I hope I get the hang of it

Re: Where/How to begin learning how to Knit?
I knit. I learned from my mother. I love it. It is relaxing and I love making gifts for the people in my life. I started because I wanted to be able to make baby sweaters and blankets. But I found that I really love making sweaters (for me )
My mom and I buy most of our yarn at a shop called 'The Knitting Cove' in Port Jefferson Village. It has been there for years. I believe that they give lessons and they will also help you with something that you're working on if you're having trouble.
Good luck.

Re: Where/How to begin learning how to Knit?
I was in AC Moore yesterday and they made an announcement about daily knitting lessons in the stores. Unfortunately for those of us working a M-F 9-5 schedule the classes were in the middle of the weekdays, but if you have some free daytimes, check out AC Moore stores.

I love knitting my scarves! I taught myself from a book too.
I found helped me: Knitting for Dummies
and their is a childrens knitting book, which teaches kids to knit called Kid's Knitting i tihnk... that helped me tons because it simplified things down!
good luck!! and I hope you have a ton of fun!! Find your way to AC Moore, the yarn is beautiful and less expensive than most places I have seen!

I just taught myself from a book. I would definitely say that taking a class would be the best way but you can teach yourself. AC Moore has a huge selection of yarn and beginner books. I found my book at barnes and nobles.

Re: Where/How to begin learning how to Knit?
I was chatting with a friend in DC this weekend who knits, and she recommended checking out local 'stitch n b**ch' clubs. She recommended this website if you want to look for a club: .http://www.stitchnbitch.org/
Unfortunately, the closest is in Queens, I think. :(
She's learned some patterns and i know she's gotten a lot of help on projects from the other girls in her group who have more experience knitting.
