Which breast pump did you get?

Which breast pump did you get?

I am thinking of getting either the Medela Instyle (of course, they just put out the 'new' one) or the Ameda Purely Yours, which the lacation instructor said is the same thing but doesn't have the marketing campaign that the Instyle has- so it costs about $100 less.

My concern is that I buy the pump, have it all ready to go and something doesn't work out with bfing so I have a pump that is just a waste of money. Some people advise to rent for a month instead, while others I have read say to get the one you plan on using and get used to that one. Advice, tips?

I bought the small, inexpensive manual Avent pump (Isis) and then I rented an electric pump b/c my milk supply was low and the manual wasn't going to help me. The hospital gave me the 'kit' for the rented pump before we even left the hospital - the kit includes the cups and hoses so that everything is sterile.

I think it's a good idea to rent the pump in the beginning, especially if you are considering your costs. If BFing works out nicely for you, than you won't really NEED your own pump until you are getting ready to go back to work.

My advice - call some places and see what types/models of pumps they have available for rent. If they have a Medela, than that's great b/c you'll already have the cups and hoses to use with the InStyle, if you decide to buy it later on.

I have the Medela and I love it. It's a double pump and it's fast and powerful and I leave it at the office.

I thought it would be a waste of money too, because my daughter didn't latch on until almost a month later, but I pumped and when she finally latched on the transition was much easier. HTH
