which cake?? (with poll)!

Leonards is providing my cake and I want Red Velvet filling but I dont know which icing is better for a redvelvet cake..

Fondant(extra $300) or buttercream(free)?

I know red velvet's supposed to have a buttery taste to it but I dont know what icing is usually on a red velvet cake..

anyone know which one red velvet will taste better in??

Usualy red velvet cake has cream cheese icing on it. I'm not that big of a fan of cream cheese, so I prefer it with buttercream icing. I think that is what I am planning on having at my wedding.

Like the other poster said, I think red velvet usually goes with a cream cheese type of icing. So I'm thinking the buttercream might be a better match.

Would your RH let you do a tasting of both?

I guess the way I would describe Fondant icing is that it's hard on the outside - almost like a shell over the cake. The buttercream is creamy and soft - probably what you're more used to on regular type of birthday cakes.

Perhaps go to a bakery and ask them if they could maybe make some red velvet cupcakes - one with fondant icing, one with buttercream.

I know this bakery in Astoria called Martha's - which is awesome! I know they've made red velvet cupcakes cause my friend got one once. And they make fondant cupcakes and buttercream cupcakes. I'd recommend checking them out.

Basically, buttercream tastes like (to me) butter and sugar mixed together - I love it but others find it too sweet.

Fondant is kind of like a thick, moldable (sp?) paste that can be colored and stays stiff for decorating. I've heard people rave about the taste of fondant but A LOT complain it has no taste. It depends how well it is made. It's cheper to make it with something like Crisco which makes it blech. If you were going to do a tasting of fondant, you would have to do it with your actual baker as, like I mentioned above, the taste depends on the baker.

There is that possibility. Like I said, fondant is supposed to be made with butter - but a special butter (I forget) that is quite expensive, so to cut corners, some use shortening or lard. And even still there are those that do use the shortening but they do try to compensate for the lack of taste. You can always ask your caterer what they use to make the fondant.

Well I think if you just want to get an idea of the difference between fondant and buttercream, you should go somewhere and test it out. Just remember that what you taste at one place may not be the same exact taste at the other place. I think no matter which cake you get from your RH, they both will taste great. So I say go taste the different types at a bakery.

I was just thinking, you mentioned that your RH suggested the fondant and how it tastes better, but it costs $300, as opposed to the buttercream which is free. I feel like your RH is of course going to gear you towards fondant because it's more money for them!!!

Also, I just thought of something with fondant. Have you ever eaten a hostess cupcake? Because the hard icing on the top of that cupcake is like a fondant icing.

I keep posting on this topic because I love cake!!! Hahahahaha!
