will red velvet taste good with butter cream icing? anyone ever try it?
I've had red velvet with reguar icing but I can't see how those two won't go together. Like someone else mentioned, they usually put cream cheese icing on red velvet. I think it will taste great!

Re: which cake?? (with poll)!
They can make the buttercream look like fondant...that's what my bakery is doing for me so we don't have to pay extra! Plus the fondant doesn't taste as good!

If you were having a really long wedding/reception outdoors I would say fondant holds up better. The problem is it looks pretty but tastes pretty awful. Buttercream tastes really good and will hold up inside so I would go with that. Good luck!
Buttercream is YUMMY... and though Fondant is really pretty to look at, it tastes like cardboard

Re: which cake?? (with poll)!
I would ask if you can taste both before making a final decision.
Personally/traditionally red velvet cake is supposed to have a cream cheese icing. I'd not do the fondant icing as I'm not a big fan of fondant icing- I'd do the buttercream icing.
I would only go with the fondant (because it holds up much better) if you were having the reception outdoors.
Red Velvet cake is what I would term a 'delicate' cake in that it's easy to break and doesn't really travel well so I would hope they do their own baking on the premesis- I was at a wedding where the red velvet cake (which had fondant icing btw) acutally cracked because the baker wasn't careful with it enough in traveling. They had to place flowers where the crack was to hide it- the bride mentioned it to me since we're close friends so I knew she was upset about it since it couldn't be repaired. Fortunately nobody could tell that the cake got cracked because of the discreet placement of the flowers.
Just some food for thought on the red velvet cake.

I'd go with buttercream..I think the majority of people like it better..
Look-wise fondant usually has a smoother, harder look..as where buttercream will look softer, but done right it can still be as smooth..and most RH's know how to do it right, so don't worry there!
Taste-wise - fondant is a little harder/chewier, kind of hard to explain..buttercream is well..creamier! hehe

Usualy red velvet cake has cream cheese icing on it so not sure how the buttercream will taste (I am sure not much of a difference anyway).

I too am doing red velvet but I'm doing the traditional cream cheese icing. If not, I would have selected butter cream - it's not an easy choice because FONDANT is sooooo freakin' pretty, but they say it doesn't taste as good as it looks. They also say (which the girls have said) the bakers can make the butter cream LOOK smooth like fondant. It's true, I've seen photos! I wish fondant wasn't so pricey though - for all the brides who are stuck trying to make the choice, ha ha.
Good luck with your choice! I'm sure it will be awesome!
PS when i get stuck on a financial choice like that, my MOH says 'that's $300 that can go to....' it's hard to think that way, but maybe it will help you too

Great Danielle, now I don't want red velvet. Ha ha! No really... I just read this and now you have me thinking it might not be a good idea, plus I want a light pink cake, won't that look funny with red cake inside?
