Okay, so I have never been to the Carribean. I am not so much a beach kinda girl but I am looking forward to sitting in a chair in the sun somewhere after this wedding is over !!
We ruled out Hawaii -too far for just a week. Same goes for Tahiti, Bora Bora etc.
This leaves us Mexico and the Carribean. I looked at some planning sites but I would love some first hand advice.
So far, I think I like Aruba or St. Marteen. We want something elegant, romantic and kind of out of the way but not too far off the beaten track that we're stuck in the middle of nowhere. I'd rather not have to rent a car either. Also, I am thinking a private beach is a must and while I love kids, I would rather spend my honeymoon trying to make one rather than dealing with them running around all over the place.

for the time period you are going- if it is right after your wedding, i would pick a place that is not in the hurricane belt- because travelling to the carribeean at that time is hurricane season.
Therefore, i would suggest Aruba- it is gorgeous and you dont have to worry about hurricanes.

That info really does help. I had no idea that Aruba had such reliable weather. I was just planning on getting some vacation insurance and crossing my fingers. Actually, it was more of just crossing my fingers b/c I ma not sure that insuarnce covers hurricans. So thanks, I will check Aruba!

You could also stay at Sandals resorts all over the Caribbean - they ALL offer hurricane insurance and back ups for you in case you travel to them duting a storm, so you can return again to the island at no cost to you!

We took a vacation in Antigua 2 years ago and I want to go back. Antigua is perfect. We stayed at a small hotel called Siboney Beach.

i hear antigua is also nice too= gorgeous in fact.
just find out about the hurricane season there too though...

yes, u can buy insurance that covers hurricanes.

I'm not a beach person and we went to Aruba for our HM and I loved it. We stayed at the Renissance Hotel which is in the city and they have their own private island. It was the perfect mix for me. We were able to go the the private island and do beach stuff and when I got board of that there was nice city stuff to do as well.
It's also a great place to go during hurricane season since it is outside the hurricane belt and it hardly ever rains there

I went to Aruba two times and it was horrible weather both times... It was in February and in June and it was so windy and rainy that all of our excursions were cancelled. It is beautiful, but I would recommend St. Thomas or St. Martin

We went on out Honeymoon from 9/26/06-10/4/06 and the weather was great in St. Lucia.

Oh my god, nobody believes me when I tell them that it rained and was extremely windy when I was in Aruba!!! Glad to hear it wasn't just me! (This was in the first week of November 2004, btw.)
To answer the OP's question, it depends on what you're looking for. Do you want to just relax, see natural wonders, ruins, architecture, festivals, etc, or just get pampered? Do you want an all-inclusive?

i dont know if you're interested in a cruise, but i'm getting married the day after you and I'm doing a cruise around the eastern/southern caribbean. royal carribean leaves out of san juan on 10/7/07 and goes to barbados, St. lucia, antigua, st. martin and st. thomas. all the beautiful islands for 7 nights. and the balcony room is only $949 each! just a thought. :)
btw...ive been to aruba in december and there was a tropical storm!! they claimed it was the first time in 25 years, but i doubt that now. but it only rained the first day. aruba is beautiful, but i was bored. theres really not much to do except water activities.

My favorite 2 carribean islands were Jamaica and St. Thomas!! they are both gorgeous and good choices!

I think you should have beautiful weather in May - don't worry!!! Although it's below the hurricane belt, I went during the tail end of hurricane season so that's why it was rainy and windy. The good thing about the rain storms is that it dries up really quickly and the winds minimize the humidity.

we are going to curacao, by friend's recommendation who has been there and loved it! and it is also not in hurricane belt, btw. it is a mix of holland and carribean, that is what i was told.
