whipped cream vs. fondant

Can anyone describe the taste of fondant vs. whipped cream? The bakery my RH uses is way out in Suffolk and I am in Nassau and with all I have t do there is no way I am getting out there to taste cake. I like the look of fondant cakes but I don't know what it tastes like.

I think fondant tastes terrible. Most people push it to the side and don't eat it but it makes for such a beautifully covered cake. I love the taste of buttercream so that's what's on my cake. You would want to consider fondant if you are having an outdoor wedding or want a very structured look. Good luck!

ETA: I found this description of what goes in it online to give you an idea of what it tastes like.

Definition: An icing made out of gelatin, confectioners sugar and water. A very smooth and maleable icing that dries hard. Not for the amateur, this icing isn't put on with a knife, but rather rolled to a uniform thickness and then laid over the cake. It can also be used for detail work such as making intricate flowers. A fondant-covered cake can be spotted by its rounded edges.

Thanks! I kinda thought people didn't really go for fondant. Better to stickwith what I know and go the whipped cream/buttercream route.

fondant is just much sweeter. If you have a detailed cake, I'd go with fondant.....

depending on the style of your cake i would go with fondant or buttercream. They can also do fondant with a layer of buttercream underneath. But i would pick one of those two over whipped cream. Whipped cream doesnt hold up well and can melt easily

fondant looks amazing but hardly anyone eats it. and its A good baker can do buttercream just as nice as fondant. I'm not a fan of whipped cream though...not much flavor

Personally I wouldnt do whipped cream - It needs to be refrigerated so you won't be able to have it out on display.
If you are not able to go for a tasting with your baker, I'd play it safe and go for buttercream. I've had some really gross fondant, but my baker uses fondant and I tasted it last week (they made us a cake!) and it was deelish!!!

I agree with everyone that i wouldnt do whipped cream. Originally i loved the look of fondant but figured i wouldnt like the taste. I am so happy i listed to DH and went with fondant. Our wedding cake was sooo delicious!

You really should try it out, fondant is not for everyone. Whipped cream is definitely not the way to go.....it melts too easily. Buttercream is much better and holds up firmer for longer periods of time. I mean, each guest will have a like and dislike when it comes to your cake...you can't make everyone happy. If the look of a fondant cake makes YOU happy, who cares what they'll think it tastes like? lol Go with what you really want!

i bet you could just go to a bakery near you and ask to sample all 3---buttercream, fondant, and whipped.

i think fondant is definitely better if you are having a very detailed cake and such---but i personally don't like the flavor of it. whipped cream may not hold as well as buttercream, but i love the taste of whipped.

find a local bakery --- that will help you decide !

I had whipped cream...it was amazing. We combined it with coconut cake and jam filling...yummy!

fondant has no taste really. And they peal it all off to cut the cake anyway....we went with buttercream and it was SO smooth!

whipped will not hold up.. and if you have your cake out for your florist to decorate and stuff, it would be better to not use whipped.. i have had some really yummy fondant and some really icky fondant.. mine was buttercream and it was really yummy.. but most people i think eat around the frosting

Re: whipped cream vs. fondant

I HATE fondant! it tastes like sweetened play dough. However, if you want a structured look...as everyone pretty much has pointed out you're better off using fondant.

I Love whipped cream and butter cream,...butter cream can look very structured and as beautiful as fondant. Whipped cream is tougher to handle and could melt.

I agree with MJDoc...go to your local bakery and try the 3.
