I have a platinum engagement ring & went to look at wedding bands today. Of course since I want diamonds, they are not cheap. A few of the jewelers told me to save a few hundred & get white gold & that it won't matter that my e-ring is platinum & it will look just as nice? What are you doing & do you have any insight about this? Thanks..

I'm going through this now for my ering. I've always wanted platinum but alot of jwelwers are trying to sell us white gold. One said with platinum you sometimes have to tighten the setting, but my mom has platinum and only had to do that once in over 35 years. I'm still going with the platinum even though I hear its not at strong. Either one looks pretty.
this is a great platinum vs. white gold explanation
ok, so here is what I was told. I have a white gold e-ring. FI was going to get platinum but the jeweler said that is is a much softer material and it scratches and bends VERY easily. 2 of my friends of platinum and they confirmed that their e-rings bent and scratched. So they got white gold bands. I am going to get a white gold band too.

My ering is white gold and it is antique- we were told by our awesome jeweler that white gold used to be made differently- mine is over 100years old- the only yellowing is where it had to be sized I can see a tiny bit...

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
Jewelers who have a lot of leftover stock from before platinum came back into fashion are trying to sell you white gold, which was probably yellow gold at one time. Also, I don't thin kthat platinum has the same profit margin for them. JMO. I really like platinum and I cannot believe what they say to try to steer me away frm it.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
Just to add - white gold is NOT supposed to be 'yellow gold dipped in rhodium'!!!
REAL/TRUE White gold should be stamped 585 and is a mixture of several metals - it's mostly gold, but has other things like palladium, iron, nickel, silver, etc. (white metals.)
Unfortunately nowadays, as mentioned above, some jewelers with leftover yellow gold stock are dipping their yellow gold jewelry in rhodium and selling it as white. Yes, it's dishonest, but it happens. Result? you'll just have to have it 'dipped' more often. If you take it to the Bowery (NYC) or the diamond district, you should not pay more than $20 or so.
My FH bought me a small yellow gold 3 stone ring for our 1 yr dating anniversary. I had it 'dipped' in rhodium to make it white around our 2 yr anniversary (3 years ago), and it still looks great.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
I don't know where my FH bought my 14K white gold e-ring, but I've had it redipped twice in the last 3 years.
The last time I had it redipped, I asked the jewelrer ( one of those places @ Queens Center) why this was happening, and he told me that the ring is actually Yellow Gold and was lightly coated in white. My poor FH knew nothing about this (or so he says) and offered to change the setting for me. But I love the shape and size of my ring. It's just unfortunate that this happened.
My advice: buy white gold only from a reputable jewelrer. And if you can afford it, go with platinum. You won't have to deal with color changes over time.

I'm trying for platinum just hope it doesn't break the bank!!! But I did hear that having it redipped is not a big deal & only costs like $30.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
Both of my rings are white gold. Yes, the white gold yellows, but cine I get it cleaned every 6 months anyway they shine it ight up again and it looks white. So my wedding band looks perfect next to my e-ring.
