I have a platinum engagement ring & went to look at wedding bands today. Of course since I want diamonds, they are not cheap. A few of the jewelers told me to save a few hundred & get white gold & that it won't matter that my e-ring is platinum & it will look just as nice? What are you doing & do you have any insight about this? Thanks..

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
Both of my rings are white gold. The only thing I can say that happened to them is that my Ering started to yellow a little. Didn't notice it till I put my wedding band next to it. Since that is older then the wedding band you can tell but not unless you examine it from the bottom.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
Both my e-ring and wedding band are white gold. I HATE my e-ring in the white gold b/c it looks yellow. My band however, I love since it has diamonds and saphires all around it. You do not see any metal. My personal opinion, if it will have diamonds or stones on it, no worries. Save the money. But if you will see a lot of the metal like my solitare e-ring, go for the platinum. I plan to change my e-ring to the exact same setting but in platinum b/c of the yellowing. It bugs me.

All you have to do is take it to a jewler and have it redipped.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
My firend has a plantium band and got diamons and the only part of her ring that would be metal was the bottom so she got white gold & saved her self some money I think if that is your thought that woudl be fine since you can't even see the metal & you can't tell the difference when it isn't seen.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
hi girls,
i am confused about the white gold yellowing. my ering is white gold. i have had tons of white gold jewelry in the family some from my mom and some since i was little, and none of them have yellowed at all. none of them have been redipped either. so i did not even think that would happen. is it common for white gold to yellow? thanx

sometimes jewelers coat yellow gold with rhodium and sell it as 'white gold'.
or
Sometimes one's body acidity/oils bring out the yellow tint in white gold (all gold is yellow to begin with - white gold is made by adding 'white' metals to the gold, like palladium.)
I, too, own older white gold jewelery. My grandmother's rings are white gold from 1958, and they've never been re-dipped either. I personally love the slightly-weathered look.
It's all about personal preference. Platinum dings/dents more easily, but white gold sometimes yellows. It's pretty much 'Pick 'yer poison.'

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
I'm going through this now for my ering. I've always wanted platinum but alot of jwelwers are trying to sell us white gold. One said with platinum you sometimes have to tighten the setting, but my mom has platinum and only had to do that once in over 35 years. I'm still going with the platinum even though I hear its not at strong. Either one looks pretty.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
We picked up our wedding rings last night. When we were looking at bands, I tried on all sorts of white gold rings, but it just wasn't 'right' to me. fortunately, FH was good to me and got me a platinum and diamond band!!!

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
My E-ring is white gold. I took it to get sized (after having it for 9 months - FINALLY) and while they had it they re-dipped it. IT looks amazing! I asked the lady how often white gold should be re-dipped and she said about 3-4 years. It was only $50 to have it sized and re-dipped - personally the white gold doesnt bother me. $30.00 every 3-4 years is no big deal - plus when they redip it they take out all the scuffs and scratches.

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
Hahaha, my FH and I just had a conversation about this yesterday. He got me platinum for my e-ring because he said 'I insisted' - which was not the case! My sister has platinum and i know its the more expensive one, so before we got engaged I told him that's what i wanted.
now we are looking at wedding bands and are running into the same situation as many of you girls. I personally don't care much now about white gold vs. platinum however i do think it'd be smart for me to just get the platinum so that one doesn't look more 'yellow' than the other.
honestly, its so stupid. I just wish platinum was cheaper!

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
I have a platinum e-ring and a white gold eternity band. There is so little metal showing on the eternity band that it really doesn't matter. It has not yellowed at all yet.

'White gold' usually is Yellow-gold dipped in rhodium. White gold does not exist in a natural state, only yellow which is why over time with regular wear, the rhodium wears off. This might tend to happen moreso than with other white gold jewelry because you wear the ring more frequently (i.e. everyday) than the other pieces of jewelry.
It really is matter of preference. Both platinum and white gold have their pros and cons. At one point or another the ring will have to be taken to the jeweler to be 'refreshed' whatever metal it is made of.

i have white gold Enagement ring- I always wanted platinum because thats what i heard was the best- but in the end there are pros and cons about both plat and white gold- fh was able to save some money on band and get better quality and bigger diamond...this is fine with me! I love my ring.. it is all preference and in the end both will need some fixing up over time...

Re: white gold vs/ platinum wedding bands
my e-ring is platinum and I ordered my wedding band yesterday, also in platinum.
I LOVE white gold, but for something that I will be wearing everyday for the rest of my life, I wanted platinum.
Here's why. I have many white gold pieces and the rings I wear often started to turn yellow. Gold is naturally yellow, they have to add rhodium to it in order to make into white gold. After a while the rhodium starts to wear off.
So as much as I love my white gold jewelry, I decided to 'splurge' on the platinum for the ring that I will wear everyday.
