Re: Who commutes from Suffolk Co on the LIRR?
We are thinking about moving to babylon... I just asked my GF (she used to live in smithtown) she said bring a laptop or a portable dvd & sit back for the ride. She said it is better if you don't have any transfers before Penn station.

I do, Ronkonkoma to Penn, about an hour and 10 minutes, it is long and it BITES! I never change in Jamaica, can't be bothered by it. I either sleep or read. Welcome to the lovely LIRR!

I used to live in Northport, 2 stops west of KP, and drove to Huntington to avoid having to change. Now I'm at Babylon and it's the same distance, but still stinks. I bring a book and get LOTS of reading and sleeping done. Good luck!

Kelly, is there a straight run from babylon, or do you have to change anywhere?

I did it for about a year from Commack. I drove to Deer Park though rather than Kings Park (even though it was way closer).
More trains at Deer Park and no changing necessary. Wound up being faster that way.
It wasn't great - but I'd sleep in the mornings and read in the evenings. Its helps a lot to have someone to ride with.

Re: Who commutes from Suffolk Co on the LIRR?
HearzBellz, sorry, didn't see this one. It's a straight run most of the time, especially during peak times.
I used to live in Greenlawn...1 stop from Huntington and it was well worth driving to Huntington to catch the train...but KP is probably a little too far for that
I would get to the parking garage at 7:15ish...and would have to park on the top level...it was filled after that
(for the 7:37 train)

Yabbobay, I used to take the 7:37 everyday! That and the 7:12. But parking there stinks...still better than Babylon parking though! $50/month...yuck!

Re: Who commutes from Suffolk Co on the LIRR?
Huntington- Penn (with NO subway) is a pretty good commute because it is almost faster than driving on the LIE to Nassau.
But Ronkonkoma-Penn or Flatbush $and all other locatoons $ucks. Well, the LIRR in general $ucks so I cannot blame the location only. And parking...now you know how you try to park at Fortunoff's the week before Christmas? Well, that is your everyday life now. Or you cannot park in a ton of lots because you have to live in the neighborhood and even then there are 20 spots at 5am and 0 spots at 6:45 am.
If you get a new train the ride is A LOT nicer than the old train.
My favorite is when there is a group of 5 or so guys who just HAVE to have a beer before they get home and think the whole train is their bar- now that is a great way to finish up your day- so relaxing and peaceful...or when the man/women next to you feels that they MUST eat some smelly, spicy or messy/greasy because they cannot wait the hour or so to get home, or chose a pretzel or bag of something....now that makes for a very pleasant ride home..and then there is the snorer (sp?)...joy to my ears.
One plus...I used to read a ton of books. So if you like to read then the commute is a lot nicer.
since I have been working from home and not commuting I have an extra $200+ in my pocket every month and don't miss it one bit......

Re: Who commutes from Suffolk Co on the LIRR?
The ABSOLUTE best is the skeevy guys who think you are sleeping and stare at you...then when you open your eyes you are greeted with someone staring directly at you who quickly looks away and pretends he wasn't! Or, the people who read the paper sitting next to you and think that extending their arm the entire length of the paper is not invading your space. Ahh, the joys of the LIRR!
when I see all the guys in suits with their 16 oz cans in paper bags - I had to laugh...very unusual picture...
reading is a big plus...I read so much...also if you can find a train buddy thats the best...I had one in the mornings...

Re: Who commutes from Suffolk Co on the LIRR?
I used to commute from Manorville to NYC (Downtown) everyday for 4 years. Then I moved to Brooklyn. I can feel your pain about commuting. I used to read a book and sleep. Then I made some friends and we used to play cards. Once you get used to it, it isn't so bad.
I always hated what I called 'encroachers' the guys, who weren't always that big but had to puff themselves up, spread their legs and take up half your seat! But then there are always the funny ones too, people who drool on themselves, snore and do other strange things that make you go hmmm.....If anyone out there rides the 6:24am out of Ronkokoma, is the couple that practically has sex on the train still riding, or did they finally get a room???????

We're moving in with his parents to save for a house, and then we'll probably buy in Ronkonkoma. So this will be my life for a looooong time. Argh. Thanks goodness I love to read, maybe that will make it bearable.

MichelleW - I don't know maybe they changed trains, our couple were older and were definitely having an affair because she was married. She got on in Ronkonkoma and he got on in Hicksville, they were all over each other it, was gross!
