I've been ruling out jobs in nyc because I live in Melville and always thought I'd dread working in the city with the commute and all. What are your experiences?

My poor FH from Northport everyday into SoHo!!! He deals with it ok though, he wakes up early, gets on the train, and either goes back to sleep or reads a book. He realizes it's not forever, so he's doing it while he's young.

Re: Who commutes to NYC from Nassau/Suffolk?
I was laid off from my job in melville in January and was forced to take a job in Times Square. I live in the Farmingdale area, never having to commute this far in my life, I will say it is an adjustment. I've been doing it for just under 3 months now and I'm getting used to the commute; but the bigger chunk out of my day still sucks.
I just recently decided to take the train out of Hicksville so this way I have more train options and I get home a bit sooner.
I give a lot of credit to those who have been doing this commute and longer for years on end... I would not be able to handle it.

Re: Who commutes to NYC from Nassau/Suffolk?
I live in Mineola now, but I commuted from Huntington to mid-town during the summer a few years ago. Taking the train to work wasn't bad because I could sleep, read, or do work. Also, I didn't have to be at work til 9:30, so I wasn't on a super-early train. The problem is getting home because it just seems to take so much longer. It was really frustrating that I'd leave my office on 53rd/5th at 6 and wouldn't be at my house until 8 or later.

I do - but I live in Valley Stream so my commute is not too bad - I take an 8:03 train to be at work at 9 and a 6:02 train home and I am home around 7 (because the LIRR is always late coming home )

I used to commute from Oakdale years ago, but that killed me. Over the years, I've moved further and further in towards the city, and I ended up in Valley Stream too. I take the Gibson train, great commute. No complaints from me anymore.

How's this?
Scarsdale (Weschester county) to Woodbury (Nassau / Suffolk border) everday?
That's my commute. Ugh, not fun.

I commuted from Islip for a couple years. It was HORRIBLE--between 2 and 2 1/2 hours each way, and trains were ALWAYS delayed.

I live in Dix Hills and commute to times square everyday for the past 3 years. I don't mind the hour and a half commute. But I do mind when the trains are delayed as they usually are. I like having the alone time.

what was I thinking, I know I'd be miserable commuting and especially after a long day, people would really start to irk me.

I became a bitter, bitter person. Especially sandwiched between two huge smelly guys on a three person seat in the train in the middle of summer.

You forgot to add that these two big smelly guys fell asleep and are snoring on your shoulders. That's when I start elbowing!!!

I commute to NYC from Seaford... the train ride is not that bad (however, I'm one of the FEW people who do not complain about LIRR )... my experience has been a pleasant one so far going on 3 years... I was like you and I REFUSED to look in the city for a job...
I find the train ride relaxing (MOST days)... I do not need to use the subway since I walk from Penn to my job, so I can't elaborate on anything other than the LIRR.
Having to deal with the city is another story for me...

Re: Who commutes to NYC from Nassau/Suffolk?
I've been working in the city since '99. I've commuted from Hicksville, Mineola and now from New Hyde Park. It's not that bad. I've been on the main line, so I guess I've been spoiled. Granted you get your HORRIBLE days where the train crrrraaaaawwwwwllllllls home, and the delays, and the overcrowding, but those are less likely. Most of the time you will have a good day. On a good day i relax, sleep and enjoy the time alone. Plus when you become used to it, you'll learn all the tricks to make it better (where to stand, what car lets you off by the stairs, how to navigate Penn without the crowds, how to use other stations like HuntersPoint & Brooklyn to avoid Penn) So all in all- it's not bad.

Re: Who commutes to NYC from Nassau/Suffolk?
I commuted from Lindenhurst to Chelsea for about 3+ years! THe only thing about hte commute is it takes more out of you physically than you would expect! By Friday you are more tired than your friends who drive 20 minutes a day! I didnt mind the commute except, after a big snow storm, days of a train accident, or any holiday all of these equate to delays!
The one thing I will say is that once you do a city commute pretty much anything feels like cake! I am now commuting about 45 minutes by car to my new job and while a lot of people say thats a lot, I am used to an hour and a half each way!
Personally I think the city has a ton to offer and I wouldnt rule it out completely maybe just be more selective with NYC jobs. The way I always looked at is was that I didnt have to do it forever, it was a good stepping stone, and I think a lot of people look at you differently b/c you worked for a NYC firm.

I commuted from Oakdale to the East Village from 2000 - 2003, and while it bothered me at first, I really did get used to it. My DH still does it. And actually, we're now looking at real estate in Wading River!

I totally agree with this statement! It kills me how people complain about their 45 minute drives to work! I smile from ear to ear when I drive 45 minutes to work! Cake!
