IMHO, I would go to a bank!!

ETA: Washington Mutual is really good from what I've heard.

I just moved into my new home and used a loan officer who was refered to me by my best friend. They were great and got me a great deal.

We used Washington Mutual and they did a great job. I highly recocomend them! HTH

please do yourself a favor and stay away from bank of ny.
nothing but headaches during both the buying and selling process.

In the past we've used...

Roslyn Savings Bank
Washington Mutual (twice)
and our current one was American Home Mortgage but it was bought out by Wells Fargo within one month of closing.

We used a mortgage broker and he was the best - I highly recommend him. Let me know if you want his info.

thanks for the tips - FH and went driving around a few neighborhoods - which of course were all out of our price range, but hopefully by the end of the year we will have enough $$ for a down payment!

well lets see....since Don works for a mortgage company we went through them....couldn't pass up lower rates and other hook ups....they sold one of our mortgages to wells fargo though, oh well
We can always try to get hook ups for ya

We found the best rates/closing costs overall to be with Geico Federal Credit Union.

We both had savings accounts with ING Direct and their rates beat others at the time. There were some difficulties since they don't have a brick and mortar bank in the area and everything was pretty much done over the phone. (I prefer face-to-face). But quite honestly, the rates were so good that's what mattered to us. You can see their current rates at www.ingdirect.com.

they give employees no application fee, and either a half point discount or 1/8th % off the rate...i just dont want to put all of our eggs in one basket

Ive heard some banks have special deals for teachers - Commerce doesnt :(

are you a teacher? do you have an account at the teachers credit union?

if not open one- and just put $50 in there

they gave my Dad a better deal then my DH could and with hardly any fees

FH is teacher - to belong to Teachers FCU you have to teach in suffolk I believe. He teaches in the City, but Im sure they have a CU there.

Chase and Wells Fargo..

I liked Chase better as far as transactions going smoothly. Then again, the title company messed up with my Wells mortgage so I could be jaded.
