I invited pretty much the same people to my e-party that I will be to my wedding..
I believe the proper etiquette is the following: you can either invite just close friends (ie, bridal party) and family or you can invite who you will invite to the wedding.. you should not, however, invite people who you do not plan on inviting to the wedding, to the e-party..

Re: Who do you invite ?
I kept my e-party to bridal party/spouses, immediate family, grandparent and aunts/uncles. There were no friends of the family invited, none of my dad's cousins etc... I wanted it to be a time for people to get to know each other. You should NOT invite people who will not be invited to the wedding BUT that does not mean you have to have wedding part 1. It really depends on budget too. We were paying for our wedding (well 99% of it) and we paid 1/2 of the e-party so we had to keep it on the small side. Plus I hate people to think they have to purchase gifts for us for the e-party and shower and wedding. JMO.

Re: Who do you invite ?
i didn't have an engagement party, but I do have one this weekend and i can tell you...you do feel obligated to get the person 3 gifts.
I think it would be rude to show up at any of the 3 parties and not come with a gift.
Hence...I'm not a big fan of e-parties.
But, probably because I'm on a huge budget right now and don't want to spend $!

Re: Who do you invite ?
I am inviting family members and close friends of our families and our close friends. That alone is about 100 people.

Re: Who do you invite ?
I didn't even wanted an engagement party because I didn't want people to feel the need to give a gift. Also, I am a little older and felt strange having one. Our parents wanted us to have one, so we had a nice dinner in a room in a restaurant. We only invited immediate famiy (which was about 40 people and really tough to distinguish).
My brother had one in a hall and it was like a mini-wedding. It was immediate family and closest friends. We left off people like co-workers, family friends, parent's co-workers, etc.

Re: Who do you invite ?
I think we are going to have one with just immediate family and close friends. Should be about 35-40 people. Hopefully a sunday brunch type thing, monstly for people to meet and get to know each other.

We invited family (up to aunts & uncles) and BP only. It still came to 75 people!!!! I did feel bad that people will feel obligated to buy 3 gifts for us
