Who else is not feeling the urge to buy a house

Fh and I got to talking, and the home prices in this area is downright depressing.........We just have no desire to buy a house ANYTIME soon. We have a pretty sweet deal with our situation right now and see no reason to leave..anyone else feel like the whole homebuying this is not really pressing...

Naw I am not with you girl. Where we live is expensive but I would rather pay my mortgage than pay rent and help someone else buy their house.

I hear you, but it will be my family I would be excited to get away from. Well we live in Fh parents house ( they are a godsend).it is a great apt. We don't pay anything except the cable and cell phone and stuff and that's it. His parents own the house so it is not a big deal. i LOVE nyc and I have seen other states and I am not going any further than NJ (unless I move so San Fran.)........we just don't have that homebuyer bug....is that normal. I know married people are 'suppsed' to be thinking about this stuff, but we have no desire...

eta - if we were to pay rent it would cost us $1500 per month...or at least that is what our apartment goes for in our neighbors house

FH really wanted a house, but I was dead set against it - especially this year, with the wedding coming up. I actually enjoy having a landlord to take care of maintenance issues, and I love love love our neighborhood, which is otherwise unaffordable.

That said, somehow I gave in to FH, and we are closing on our new home in April...

As long as you're comfortable with where you are and what you are doing, don't feel pressured by 'what's the norm' because the struggle sometimes doesn't seem worth it. We went as a goof to some open houses in Oakdale/Sayville this weekend (on our way into Nassau) and I was FLOORED by the cost of the houses. One was for $459,000 (large, large single floor ranch w/tremendous property) but it needed EVERYTHING. Outside of the dimensions, you couldn't salvage anything about the house unless you were down with the 'Early American Yuck' look! Another one was $600,000 - big, well kept, attached legal apartment but taxes were near 10,000!!! How could you do that, even with a renter?!?

I looked at husband and was like 'Well, thank God we bought when we did'....We think we're screwed NOW, there's no way we could afford something now.

Nope.
no desire what-so-ever.
we are so busy there is no way we want to deal w. home ownership- especially that we would probably have to purchase a home that needs a lot of work.
yuck.

Re: Who else is not feeling the urge to buy a house

i would love to buy but have no desire to have all my $$$ tied up in a home and not having much of a life outside of it. my mom has stated many times that after buying, fixing, and selling 5 homes 'depending on where one lives, homeownership is highly overrated'

we were thinking of buying a condo in the coming years, however we may just elect to continue to pay rent and buy a house we can grow into...don't know...

I'm not feeling it because prices are soooooooooooo expensive. I am waiting for the prices to drop. They have to!! The prices are too high right now. We were really against renting but it's that or live with parent's.. which we actually considered.. but we really want our privacy!!

I reaaaaaaly don't want to buy a house!!!!

I would be perfectly happy owning a nice apartment in a nice building in a nice neighborhood. But DH is not down with that! He is all for suburban living!

Re: Who else is not feeling the urge to buy a house

We wanna buy something.. but not a house around here... We look at the real estate ads and they have ads for house that look like $hit with a price tag of 400 - 600K!

Are they kidding the rest of us?

So.. we'll go for a coop.. (or hopefully a condo), and a few years down the line we'll go for the house. I would love to get out of state.. but leaving friends and family would be VERY difficult. Both of us are really close to our families. And we would miss them like crazy. We are VERY close.

That's not to say that a while ago I wasn't looking at HUGE houses in NC that are the same price as a mid sized co-op around here.

We'll see where the road takes us.

as much as i want a in ny...we can't afford a lil shack on the road... so we started looking for a house in Tampa FL Everything in NY is overated.
I can buy 2 houses in Tampa by time i buy 1 here... sad

Its a win lose situation in a way...we gain so much but we lose NY...then again, change is good. Eventually, we will come back to NY

We are probably going to buy a house really soon, if not then a condo or co-op. My FH does not want to rent because like others said you are paying someone else mortgage. We would rather own something in the end. We are actually finding more houses than we thought in our price range

I feel the same way about the prices here! FH wants to stay on the island, but I want to move back to the country. I figure when we start looking at houses he will realize how expensive it is and say hey lets get out of NY!

We want to buy a house but prices are just out of this world. We will probaly buy a house after the wedding and move out of state where prices are a little more reasonable.

Re: Who else is not feeling the urge to buy a house

I wasn't too jazzed about buying a condo but we did it and i have to say it was one of the best decisions EVER! Our condo has already gone up about 70 grand in a year and a half. My mom pushed me to do it and i am soo thankful. THis was a great way to make money for a downpayment for a house..

In the end, since you aren't paying rent, you great..you have such a great opportunity to save. I say do it so when you are ready you have a nice chunk of money waiting for you...

PS- we can't wait to move into a house...Having a condo is a great way to break yourself into the buying thing
