Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

Hi! I never officially said I was going to actually quit, always said I'd cut down. HOWEVER, I have NOT smoked since New Years Eve! I'm very excited!

Congratulations!

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

Ok, I quit in september. Yes, I did gain a little weight. NOt a lot, but enough that my jeans are a little too tight. I am not eating more, but your metabolism slows down as a result of the lack of nicotine.
Everyone has told me that I will adjust. I think I could take the weight off if I started working out and got my metabolism a little higher, but to tell you the truth.. and think about this ladies..

wouldn't you rather be 10 pounds heavier and HEALTHY than smoke and get cancer?

If your answer is no, then maybe time to rethink your piorities?

I know quitting isn't easy ( I just went through it) but it really gets easier EVERY DAY. Try to stay away from smokey places (bars, etc) try not to hang out wiht the smokers on break at work. If your FI and friends or family smoke, ask them not to do it in front of you for a while. This will help.

Good luck!!!

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

Obviously, no one wants to get cancer.

I am speaking for myself here.
I would rather lose a few pounds and start to feel better about myself and feel a small sense of accomplishment - that I can do this! Possibly get the feeling that I can control something.

When that happens, I will stop smoking.

I know this is difficult as I have attempted to stop in the past and I know it gets easier every day and I was stupid to ever go back to it.

Edited to say there are health benefits that can be gained by losing weight.

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

OH of course losing weight can be healthy for many (most) people. I am not suggesting doing one instead of the other. I just feel terrible when people DONT quit for fear of gaining weight.

But I agree, I would not suggest trying to do both at the same time!!!

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

I agree with Christine....A couple of months longer smoking to me is worth it to loose weight so i dont wind up 250lbs and growing!! LOL

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

I plan to quit April 1st. I am so afraid that if I quit now with only 3 months till the wedding I'll for one gain weight and two will go insane b/c my cigarette breaks help calm my nerves. I want to quit so when we go for life insurance I can honestly say I'm a non-smoker

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

I quit a year ago and only gained 5 pounds... 5 pounds is nothing!!!

But I quit by this crazy, acu-pressure-type procedure which eliminated 80% of the physical withdrawal - that includes the part that makes you want to eat anything that doesn't move!

The one piece of advise, which most of you probably know already, is that you can't quit for anyone but yourself - not because your FH nags the cr@p out of you (like mine did). If you're not ready to quit for you, you won't succeed. And each time you quit, your chance of success is better!

Good luck!!

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

eroxgirl - you are right about the reasons for quitting. My DH decided he wanted me to stop smoking a few weeks ago - smoked my last cigarette for me and said ok, that's it - you're done. We got into a big argument over this. His heart is in the right place but his execution was way out of line.

(he's an ex-smoker and used to have an occasional cigarette when we are on vacation)

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

If you ladies don't mind can you post what ages you started smoking. My husband and I were having a conversation on this the other day and I am wondering if what he said is true?

Re: who else quit smoking for 2003?

14ish... thats when it became a daily thing, at least. They said it would stunt my growth (I was taller than all the boys so I had a complex!) it didn't work...

I quit last December - 13 years
