Who ever knew?

Original post by sugar4spc

Who ever knew that the question 'Are you taking his last name?' would make your stomach drop and tears form. Well FH and I went and got our Marriage liscense today. Very easy and quickly done. Almost to easy...lol nothing in the wedding process has been this easy. So yes when this question was asked i got very quiet..( i never doubted not taking his name just to hear it asked officially though). I truly do feel like i lost a largeof me. Im sure this is normal. What does the groom have to give up? lol. I was in desperate need of that paper bag. I better start carrying one around to all these wedding errands. LOL BUt yes another thing accomplished.

At least you got it done. I am actually VERY excited to change my name

I feel the same way! I HATE my last name, always have. It's unusual, hard for people to spell (why, I don't know b/c it's only 5 letters!), and I was made fun of for it all the time. His is so normal and American it's ridiculous. I don't feel like I'm losing a part of myself, because I'm still me, just with a new and improved name!

What I have decided to do is keep my name until we either move from DC or I get a new job, which would happen within the next year or two. But my main reasoning right now is that if I were to change my name come December, it would be confusing enough for folks at work (we have a global address list for the entire agency) that it would make life pretty difficult and I'd want to just scream.

So, eventually, I'll be Mrs. ... but for now, I'll stay a Ms.

But I am sure that when I eventually make the move, I will have a moment of lump in the throat, tears, you name it.

awwwwwww....i know what you mean!

i was quite depressed when i went to the DMV to change my name a few weeks ago. i explained to DH that its hard having the same name for the first 27 years of my life, and now having to change it. i know i will get used to my new last name eventually, but right now its very hard to sign my name as a Mrs.

i plan to hyphenate...he is not really against it, but he is not so for it either...I just really want to keep my fathers last name with me...i am already 38 so I have had this last name personally and professionally for all that time ...plus my father passed when I was 15 so I really would like to keep it with me....
