Who is going to stay home.....

and take care of the kids? Has anyone had this discussion yet?

Scott and I discussed this from the beginning of our relationship. Although I am the high-earning in our family I hope to be able to stay home and care for our children, even if just for a few years. We have NO idea if it is possible yet. The cost of houses here on LI are going to make it really tough for us if I stay home. But we will see.

We have started to have this discussion. I would love to stay home but when the time comes we will have to look at finances.

If anyone stays at home it will definately be me. FI has the better job and higher earning potential. But like most others, it all depends where we are in our lives when the time comes.

That's a good question... We know we're planning on having kids, just haven't had the discussion about what we're going to do with them once we have them.

I really want to stay home for the first few years (or work P/T) because I don't want someone else raising my kids F/T. We just talked about it last night, but he doesn't think it will be possible (secretly neither do I)

We both plan on working. Although I think we can afford to liv eon just my fiance's salary, I have worked really hard to get where I am in my career and want to continue working. We defintely plan on kids but we decided we will both be working parents. I am hoping eventually I can move into a company that has more programs to promote mothers in the workplace and hopefully telecommute a couple days a week.

Well we discuss kids all the time, basically I think it is a understanding that I would for awhile and then see what happens.

Hi, it's funny you asked if any one has dicussed this yet? My FH and I ALWAYS have this conversation, probably because I am a little pyschotic - haha! Anyway, right now we both plan on working, when we have children, the goal will most likely be that I stay home with them... But we are not writing anything in stone... Either I'll be the one home or we both work But we'll see

I am the higher earner and won't be able to stay home although I would love to!!! I guess I will see when the time comes. The houses on long island are definitely too high for me to be able to stay home!!!

I think we will both be working in the beginning. My mother has offered to watch the kids FT so I do not have to pay for childcare which can get expensive. Hopefully, when the kids get older I'll be able to stay home.

We both plan on working, even after the come.
However, I will work PART-TIME from the time they are born to the time they go to school.

I'm working on altering my career so that I will be able to work from home PT when the kids are little and up the hours as they go to school. I really want to be home when the kids are little, but I can't imagine not working at all (all that school and hard work!). Plus, before we have the kids (which should be a while) it'd be lovely to work from home FT! I love my FH, but he's a slob, so if he was home with the kids I'd come home to a disaster area every night

nope, I would go back to work.. we both make a pretty good living and I could just do RE full time, but there's nothing better than being a salaried employee..

I'd LOVE to stay home with the kids, but in order to continue to live the kind of lifestyle that we both do, I'll have to go back to work... hopefully, my mom will be taking care of the kidswhile I'm at work and FH and I also plan on buying a house in the school district where he gets a good job... (he's currently in grad school) =) that way, he can keep a good eye on them and being that he'd get out earlier than me, fh's excited that he could make dinner for us and even bring the kids with him to pick me up from the train station.. hehe

Well, my FH wants to be the one to stay home. But by the time we have kids his salary will be way higher than mine. So I think I will stay at least for the first two years. (My job allows two years per child). So it will probably be me.
