I'm definitely the more ambitious one. DH is very intelligent but also lazy. He's easygoing and easily contented, so he's not motivated to look for a better job than the one he has. His current job is his first one out of college, and originally, he didn't plan to stay there this long (it will be 4 years in April). He works hard and doesn't get paid well at all. It's very frustrating for me b/c I know if he put the effort in, he could be doing better. He's fine with the fact that once i get my doctorate, I will be earning more than him. I like that he's okay with that, but I want him to have more ambitions for himself! He says he'll go to grad school one day, after I'm done...
Sorry..didn't mean to turn this into a rant.

Re: Who is more motivated/ambitious, you or DH/FH?
That's a tough one. I don't like change and could be happy to stay in my current position for good. I have occasional bursts of ambition but nothing sustained, if that makes sense.
DH is a college professor and worked really hard to get his PhD. He once said, only half jokingly, that he did the PhD because he didn't want to work that hard later on. Teaching college is a good gig, at least where he is. But now he is really thinking about getting out. He's tired of his students getting entry-level salaries that are higher than his (his area is economics and finance.) and we're thinking more about kids and expenses, etc.
On the one hand, I would love it if he got a job that paid more, especially if it allowed me to be a SAHM when the time comes. But I also love his schedule because it gives us a lot of time together, which will be cut down drastically if he goes into finance. And I worry that he won't be happy, because he did the corporate thing once and hated it.

When it comes to work, DH is WAY more ambitious than me! When it comes to working out though, I'm by far the more ambitious one.

I am the one....After reading these posts about the non-motivated/ambitious men, I wonder, what is w/ them. My youngest brother is the same way. (My other brother is a dynamo)...

I would say we are pretty equal with a slight edge going to me

Definitely me. DH complains about his job constantly, but isn't willing to do anything about it. He enrolls in courses in other areas, then drops the classes. Meanwhile I finished my Master's and am starting my doctorate while he plays nintendo and online poker.

DH is more motivated. I would just like to be a SAHM. But I am working 2 jobs and banking my money to help

Re: Who is more motivated/ambitious, you or DH/FH?
Career wise we're both equally motivated now. But I'm the one that got him to be motivated. A few years ago he would've been perfectly happy with his low paying crapt job but I lit into him a few times and now he's in a much better position and he's motivated to get better positions. He even went back to school for his master's.

We were both motivated enough to go for our masters. But, when it comes to $$, I definitely feel like dh is more ambitious. He also LOVES what he does, so I feel that makes him more driven.
ETA: I am more motivated socially and around the house. If it were up to dh, we would be playing poker and nintendo 24-7...like Beth mentioned..lol

Re: Who is more motivated/ambitious, you or DH/FH?
Honestly, neither of us are motivated or ambitious ENOUGH... our biggest flaw as a couple
Though DH gets the slight edge with work .. he works FAR harder than I do and is constantly trying to learn new things and take on new responsibilties.. I just wish his job didn't take such advantage of him, and he'd take those skills and find a better company to work for
In other ways, we're both lazy arses ....though I probably have the slight edge with household stuff, chores, social planning, etc...

Re: Who is more motivated/ambitious, you or DH/FH?
DH is definitely more motivated and ambitious when it comes to work. If we ever ended up relocating for a job, it would be his. I think I kind of defer to him when it comes to whose career is more important.
As far as maintaing our home and making friends and doing things not related to work, I exceed here. I am the one who can't sit around on the weekends.DH loves to vegetate or as he puts it, 'sit on the couch and be blahhhhh'
I guess we are balanced as a couple because of this.

I think I get jealous sometimes, b/c I would like to be the lazy one, but can't deal with both of us being that way!
I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN!!!!
seriously.

Re: Who is more motivated/ambitious, you or DH/FH?
Yeah, we're pretty even too. I'm an attorney, and as ambitious as you get (especially compared to my brothers, who are the biggest laziest ARSES!). My DH owns his own company though, and took a big risk by moving from Israel to the states to work for the Israeli Economic Mission, and then took a bigger risk by dropping everything and opening his own company with a partner... at home though, I'm VERY lazy. Just got the 'speech' from Dh that I'm not pulling my own weight around the house
