I am so completely baffled by this. Who here would pay 400K for a cape with one bathroom, 3 bedrooms, a kitchen as old as my parents and as small as my nieces Barbie dreamhouse, and a backyard with a metal chain link fence and no landscaping???????????
One like this just sold two doors down from my sister!

Re: Who is paying these prices?!
In case anyone wants to consider moving to Canada, they have houses starting at 200K, Canadian!!!
And I won't even talk about the size of some of the mansions in the burbs there (5,000 SF), approximately valued at $600,000K Canadian, all brick!!!
We're tempted to move there (b/c of nicer living situation and slower pace of life)

Re: Who is paying these prices?!
teri, we're in that category. i thank my lucky stars everyday that FH's parents were so generous in helping us buy our house. it was actually FFIL's idea when we decided to move to jersey. otherwise, i don't think we ever could have afforded the down payment.
i have posted on the home board about the issues we have with our home & the work that needs to be done. but honestly, i love this place. FH & i sometimes just sit in the living room & take it all in. my house is bigger than the house i grew up in. its not the center hall colonial i dreamed of, but its a very charming split with lots of land. if we never redo anything, i'll still love it here. we really appreciate this house.
i can certainly sympathize with those going through the home buying process. we looked at tiny tiny colonials that needed complete renovation- they were the only houses in our price range. but we waited it out & found a great home thats very livable. its very hard to be patient, but it worked for us.
My DH wants to move somewhere else SO BAD- I'm the one keeping me here.
I can't help but wonder why I can't leave? All my friends have moved around- we all live in the same area- but some are in NJ, some in Westchester, come Long Island- it's hard to get together and now that we are all married we don't see eachother as often as we used to.
What's keeping me from moving to Arizona and getting an amazing home? I can always come home to visit? Now that I live in NJ I hardly see my Mom anymore- maybe every 2 months.... It's crazy..
let me just tell you about AZ...DH's family lives there...and there is a reason it is cheaper...
either there aren't jobs in the area (Phoenix the exception) OR it is so FREAKING HOT...believe me...in the shade it doesn't help!!! 115 degrees!!!???
so you think a/c right (my poor niece says she doesn't leave the house in the summer)...but my BIL pays $300 a month in electricity EVERY month...and his salary is no where near NY ones...so it is give and take...they have a great house!!!

Re: Who is paying these prices?!
This whole thread and just regular life issues had me looking at RE sites in Mount Pleasant, SC which is a suburb of Charleston.
$170,000 3Br/2Ba 1220 square feet, 1/3 of an acre. Built in 1998.
$305,000 4br/2.5Ba 2557 square feet, built in 1999.
Here is a place not too far away from NY with milder weather - I have to check job markets, etc. but it's really making me think

Re: Who is paying these prices?!
Here is home in charleston at NY prices
For $695,000 you could have this The picture links didn't work..
DH and I have a master plan. We are going to live in our current place in Jersey City for one more year. Then we are going to move into a 2 bedroom in Jan 05 because we will be TTC in Nov. 04 and will need to have a 2 bedroom :)
Then after a year in our new place (which will probably be in Jersey City, Edgewater, Fort Lee, Weekawken or Hoboken we will start looking for a house. Who knows where this will be- could be Jersey, could be CT, could be Westchester, could be Charleston or Savannah. It probably WILL NOT be L.I. because DH and I don't think the quality of life up here is worth the $ (congestion, traffic, etc) and we will NEVER make enough money to live how we want to on L.I. (like millionaires :)
So that's the grand plan- It's exciting- but who knows HOW it's gonna turn out :)
sassy...you could do a one br with a bassenette for a little while rather than having to move twice...I hate moving so thats what I would want to do

I would do that- but right now we live on the first floor of a brownstown- we don't have a separate bedroom- it's sort of a 'great room' which is our livingroom & bedroom- and then our kitchen.. It's big by NYC/Jersey City apartment standards- about 900 sq ft, (most 1 bedrooms are 650 or so) but we would need something separate when we have a kid- we have no room for a bassinette or a changing table here :( I wish we did b/c I LOVE LOVE LOVE this apartment.
