Re: Who still smokes?

I am a social smoker.

I like to smoke if I have a drink or if I am really, really stressed out. Like when I had a CRAZY boss who would lock me in my office, I would go home and want to smoke three cigarettes at once.

i never ever smoked - never tried it once. i grew up in a family of smokers, mom, dad, sister and brother all did at one point. my mom & sister have since quit and my dad and brother still do.

as to why people do it now, don't know. but its like someone said, its the same as people who drink excessively...you know its bad for you, but....

I smoke and it is one of the hardest and worst habits to break...and to make it even harder FH smokes so theres no support to help the other out in quitting...Although I have to say that over the last couple of months my urge to pick up a cigarette is very infrequent...basically I'll have my first cigarette of the day at 5:00 pm and maybe one or two the rest of the night (not bad considering I use to run downstairs for one four times during the day)...they say you'll know when you're ready to quit...I'm getting there...wanna know the f*d up part of it...I think I don't try hard enough to quit because I'm scared I'm going to gain weight PATHETIC aren't I??? Rather kill myself than gain weight

I smoke but I'm not a crazy smoker anymore, I was in college and when I first started.
I still buy my cigarrettes but can go for a couple of days w/o smoking.
Almost everybody in my famlily smokes.

I have had more exposure to the 'bar atmosphere' than probably anybody on here from 12 years of DJing.

TONS of opportunities to smoke.

To this day I have never smoked.... not even tried it. Unbelieveable!

I do drink a lot though. Not as much as I used to but everybody has to have a bad habit I suppose.

I don't smoke, but I am trying to figure out why anyone would want to. It's not like I have never tried a cigarette before though. I don't want to insult anyone, I just don't understand why it's enjoyable. I would not put it quite in the same category as food and working out...those are things that sustain you and keep you healthy. It can not be as enjoyable as living a long healthy life...as well as having the people you love living long healthy lives.

In my substance abuse class in college, a professor would put this on the board every day in the begining of class:
Knowledge + Attitude = Behavior

I don't know if its more that its a mental habit rather than an enjoyable habit...at least for me...I can go all day without thinking about lighting up...then as soon as I see the pack or see someone smoking I light up...I know lots of people who have tried cigarettes and never wanted to put another one to their lips again and then there are people like me who became addicted...its mental addiction at least for me...hence what I said in my previous post about weight gain...

It's an addiction-and in that sense it's enjoyable for those who are addicted. Food and exercise in moderation is ok. Overeating is incredibly unhealthy, obesity is indicative of an addiction. Body builders are incredibly unhealthy, the strain they put thier bodies under is excessive and can lead to many illnesses, not to mention those who are addicted to cardio, the continous strain can damage thier heart muscles, weight lifting in excess can lead to strokes.

Choose your vice, I guess. I sort of feel the same way about gambling - I feel like it is throwing away my hard earned money, because the odds are always in favor of the house. I don't enjoy AC or casinos and would rather spend my $ on other things.

I dont smoke, thankfully never really did. I recently lost my mom to lung cancer so I wont share any of my clouded views on smoking.

However, I just really want to congratulate those who quit! After watching my mom try to quit many times, I know its a hard thing to do!!!

I'm so sorry about your mom. My father has lung cancer and had to have part of his lung removed about a month ago.

I smoked for over 20 years and quit 3 months ago. I enjoyed smoking -- the act of it, the taste of it. I don't really miss it anymore though.....once in awhile, I'll get a craving, but it goes away in seconds.

I actually smoked for 17 years, and 13+ of it was while bartending full time. I unfortunately started very young, but I did quit 2 years ago this past March. I also stopped bartending, which made it much much easier. Now the smell actually nauseates me to the point where I will not go into a bar that lets people smoke.
