My mom has worked at a college on LI for the past 14 years. She really likes it. A lot of the people she works with are really nice and since she's in a union she doesn't have to work overtime or anything. The only bad thing about the union is that you don't get a raise unless everyone gets a raise.
My brother works in Public Safety at the same college and enjoys it. He started out when he was a student and worked his way up.
Deirdre's (pschica) husband works with my brother, maybe FM her to see how her DH likes it?

Yes we do! I do like it--I worked in the city at Morgan Stanley before starting work here, and it has been a wonderful change. The hours are very regular, and we have a wonderful union with great benefits. I was able to get my Master's degree for free, and they may pay for part of my Doctorate. Great vacation and sick time, health, etc. You will find that the public colleges pay more than the private schools, but starting pay is not much unless you have experience working in the particular area (I worked the whole time I was an undergrad., so they counted part of that as years experience). Still, it was a pay cut coming from working in the city, and sometimes I question it. The people are generally very friendly, and it is a nice atmosphere in which to work.
