Whooping Cough?

Someone I know might have it, I've checked www.webmd.com but I still don't know much.

Anyone know anything about it? How dangerous it is? How contagious it is?

If it is whooping cough, it is extremely contagious. This person should not be around unvaccinated children, or, for that matter, even adults who received the vaccination as children, as their immunity has probably faded.

The good news is that I think it is very treatable with common antibiotics.

It's very contagious. I think that many doctors will also prescribe antibiotics to the infected person's family members as a preventative measure.

If I recall correctly, it's not a highly dangerous infection - not a lot of deaths due to pertussis.

I got this:'Many people with whooping cough are given an antibiotic such as erythromycin' from the website t posted.

I can't take a lot of antibiotics (bad stomach) I can take Levequin. The person who might have it took something then Biaxin because the symptoms didn't go away and that's what the doc gave.

Any idea if those antibiotics are in the same family that would help?

This isn't something I know a lot about, but I do know that erythromycin and Biaxin (which I think is clarithromycin) are in the same family. Levaquin is a different class of antibiotic - not sure how well it treats respiratory infections.

I know there's got to be some nurses or physicians on this site that know much more than I do!
