Why am I even upset? (LONG)

Original post by prncssrachel

I don't know why I'm allowing this to get to me, but I am just so upset......
Last night, I heard my mother on the phone with a colleague of her's, and she was gushing and bubbling over with joy because this girl just got engaged. And all I could think about was how my mother was NOT in any way, shape or form even close to happy when I got engaged. She just kind of said, 'Wow, wonderful,' with a flat tone. And since then, if I try to talk about my wedding, she says that there's no point in talking about something that is so far away. Fine, it's far away. Whatever. So when she got off the phone, I said to her, 'Wow, what a reaction. I didn't even get a reaction like that when I got engaged.' And she was just like, 'What are you talking about?' But she had this look on her face so that I KNEW she KNEW. So I asked her, 'Why don't you ever want to talk about my wedding?' And her response was as usual, 'It's just too far away to think about.' So she just came home before and as I was sitting on the couch said to me, 'Well, besides your wedding being too far away to talk about, you're too young to get married.' I was just floored. What the hell? So I said, hello, that's why we're waiting to get married. (We'll both be 26 when we get married, and to me, that is NOT too young.) So then she said, ' I love JT and I think he is the one for you, but you two are too young.' Then she left to go have dinner with a friend. So how am I supposed to react to that? My own mother is not even happy that I am getting married, she won't talk about it and I'm sure she has a whole list of things that she is thinking about the situation that will continue to come out between now and my wedding. I consider my mother and I to be very close, and I always envisioned her being happy when I got married, and this is breaking my heart. Not being able to share this time in my life with my mother is making me question my relationship with her. I just wish that I could say to hell with her, but her opinion is so important to me. I never thought I woudl have to plan my wedding with my mother looking on disapprovingly, yet here I am. I'm just so sad, and I needed to vent.

You can call my mom, she'll be happy for you and I will talk about it with you.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded. It means a lot to me. I spoke with my mother before and I told her that I think she is projecting some of her own issues on to me, and she agreed. We talked it all over, and although I am not extremely convinced she 'gets' it, it was semi-progress, and is good for now. Thank you all, again!

rachel, im happy for you and your not too young i will be 26 and married its when your emotionally ready. you are the baby and she may still view you as the baby. my father up to last month said it was so far away not its 2 months away and yesterday he said wow its coming up and now is feeling the anxiety that his baby is leaving it will be an empty house. it probably easier for her to deal with it by saying its so far away. time flies look at us its been almost a year. now im feeling the stress. after my wedding maybe she will lighten up.

Rach... . Sorry your mom is making you feel this way. I too am very close with my mom and let everything she says effect me, so I know where you're coming from with that.

Hopefully your talk with her will make her realize how unsupportive she's being.

I'm here if you want to talk
