Why are Make up artists so expensive

Why are Make up artists so expensive

So I have been trying to book a makeup artist- and I am coming across people that I love their work- but not their price. I feel like every makeup artist that I have called is charging $200 for bridal makeup! THen it reduces to like $85 for the bms. One woman who I liked a lot was $375!!! I understand that you should look your absolute best but its just soooo expensive!!! What should I do?

I know, it's alot. My makeup person is $250 for day of!!!!!!!! BUT she was SO awesome, I decided to just pay for it. She was $150 for all my bms!!! CRAZY!!! I don't even know what they are going to do as of now. I say if the work is amazing, it's worth the price. But that's just me. You could go to a MAC counter also, you just have to buy 5 products I think.

I am cheap to a fault, but I am also incredibly vain, so I just ****** it up. I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. But that's not always the case either...unfortunately it's hit or miss, and you just have to try them out to see who you like....sometimes someone expensive isn't that great, and sometimes they are. It stinks! But it's just trial and error.

I HATE that they totally rob brides.... not fair. I happen to know someone who does great make-up, so I am lucky. However, I paid $150 as a BM last yr for my friend's wedding. The only good thing is for that price, they usually come to you. I prob should have become a make-up artist...didn't know it was so profitable.

Well they are artists. Have you ever had a bad makeup trial? I have TWICE and its a train wreck. Moreso it makes you want to cry to see how terrible someone can make you look. Maybe Im vain but to walk out of a place and want to cry because you dont believe that is you in the mirror? OR dont want to stop at a store because UGH what if you bumped into someone you know looking like this?! Its a horrible feeling.

And Im not saying you wouldb ook someone because they were cheap but made you look terrible, BUT when someone knows what they are doing and do an amazing job, its WORTH THE SPLURGE!

Im VERY frugal and I ALWAYS hunt for the best price, BUT I am also a believer in quality and SOME things are worth the splurge. So in other areas where I was able to save, it allowed me the room to splurge on my hair/makeup person. BUt I knew that from day one, the one thing I KNOW for a fact Im splurging on is this.

On your ONE and ONLY wedding day, do you wanna feel TOTALLY relaxed and comfortable because you KNOW you have someone who is going to make you look stunning? Make you feel absolutely GORGEOUS the day that EVERYONE will have ALL EYES ON YOU? THATS why its worth it. =/

Yea there are def some artists that are good and arent AS expensive but Ive come to see thats the cost for an experienced, in demand, TALENTED as all he** makeup artist.

Its just one way to think about it. To me I've always been a makeup kinda girl, so I have a TON of respect for what these people do. I know how difficult it is. =)

All the girls bring up great points.Things that are considered for makeup pricing are:

Time-the makeup artist is gonna take wayyyy more time on the bride than anyone else.

Travel/Gas-they are coming to YOU which will always make the price bigger. Especially if significant travel is involved.

Products-makeup artists carry up to thousands of dollars of makeup and brushes-makeup brushes average in price of 30-50 dollars each. Plus if they're carrying airbrush guns and compressors, do you have any idea how expensive that equipment is?

Talent-the more bookings they have, the more they're going to charge. Also, makeup artists know how to make sure you photograph beautifully so when you look back on those pictures you will be flawless.

Stress-yes, stress. Makeup requires a lot of concentration, and it is a job that requires a lot of skill and patience. Its a lot harder than it appears.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

What she said. I do make-up and trust me, it's NOT easy and can be costly.

Because when you put the word 'wedding' in front of anything, the price immediately triples

SOOOOO true and SOOOOO frustrating.

Maybe you could go to a mall close to you and talk to one of the ladies at your favorite makeup counter. She could be your makeup artist for the day.

ITA. I was b*tching about the prices but at the same time, it's your wedding day and you need to look amazing and any price is worth it!

I agree that anything w/wedding brings the price up, but you really have to feel good the day of your wedding. I went on a bunch of trials and only felt good in one (unfortunately it was the most expensive person), but I felt amazing. The feeling alone is worth it for me. It's the most important day of your life.

Also, I tried a very expensive woman who was awful. You really have to try different people regardless of what you read on boards and their price points.

Have you checked Oksana? I loved the way she did my trial makeup, and she is a sweetheart and pretty reasonable for makeup.

you know, this has been my homework this week: looking at m/u artists. i started by looking at the vendors on this site and i have a major gripe.

if a m/u artist is going to charge $150-$300 dollars for the bride for m/u or $75-$200 for the bridal party, then PLEASE (and i seriously emphasize the word please), update your website and DO NOT have pictures from the 1980's or 1990's as your portfolio pieces. who the hell are you kidding. how do you have the nerve to charge those prices but yet can't update your portfolio?

i was majorly turned off by majority of them....

i'm stepping off my soapbox now
