I was at a sweet 16 yesterday and was talking to a cousin of FH's. She tells me about the dress she bought for her daughter to wear to our wedding. I was floored because FH previously explained to her how limited our guest list was because we're paying for everything ourselves. If I invite her kids, I'd had to invite MY cousins kids, and so on. I'm kinda twisted about it.

Re: Why do people assume??????
no, don't invite her kids. If she already knew that you weren't inviting kids, then I think she did this on purpose as a kind of 'now you HAVE to invite my kids' kind of thing.

I don't know. I've been trying to answer that question for a long time now!!! It really bothers me how some people just don't seem to think.
No, you absolutely don't have to invite her daughter now just bc she went out and bought a dress. I'm sure you'd love to have everyone, but your FH's cousin has to understand financial restraints!

Re: Why do people assume??????
and, another thing...who buys a dress 8 MONTHS in advance, to a wedding that they haven't even received an invite for, yet?

Re: Why do people assume??????
dont do it....dont cave in!!!!!
This was a tactical maneuver she used to get her daughter into the wedding reception.
People suck!!!!
When people do this, you have to tell them right out that 'I'm sorry but ------ wont be able to attend - we are on a very strict guest list limit with the hall'

Maybe she just said that to see what your response would be?? I am in the same boat, but I'm still not inviting the kids I don't care let them talk, let them b*tch, I'm not giving in b/c you invite one you have to invite them all

Re: Why do people assume??????
You should tell her that due to finincial restraints you & your FH have decided not to have children at the reception, except the children in the wedding party. She'll have to understand, it's rude and out of place for her to make the assumption her daughter's already invited.

I agree too! Must have been a staged conversation!

I agree! You have to draw the line... where ever they my be. We are inviting kids over 10 ONLY if they are first cousins...No cousin's kids or boyfriends either. Unless they are married or in a serious relationship (which is also tricky) they dont get invited with a guest. It is just too expensive especially when you are paying for it yourself. Everyone has a limit and dont let anyone make you feel bad about that.

That was probably a set up to put you on the spot. You should have said 'I hope you didn't remove the tags and still have the receipt for it'.

Re: Why do people assume??????
This makes me think - How do you word it in your invitations - so people don't assume... I do not want to have this issue.. The only children invited to our wedding is my FH's sister's kids.

I went to a wedding and on the invite it was written 'Adult Reception' - just an idea.

Boy, does that put you in an uncomfortable position. Let's just hope THEY kept the receipt to the dress!

Re: Why do people assume??????
ADULT RECEPTION ONLY
I find this VERY necessary to include on bottom of reception card to ensure that uninvited children do not show up at your wedding!!!!
People are WEIRD/RUDE and will assume anything!!!!
My neices and nephews are the only exception to this rule.

That's a good idea. I think I may do that since I haven't sent my invites out yet, but know the same people who gave my sister a hard time will also be trying to pull the same stuff with me!

Re: Why do people assume??????
Another thing....
Don't be shocked when you hear people you really aren't close with or people you work with saying 'I can't wait for your wedding' as if to assume they will be invited!
I HATE that garbage!!!

Make sure you also include the number of seats that has been reserved in their name. I got a response card back that was sent to one person that stated 'name + 4 others' What the hell do you think this is?

I agree....I saw another bride that is doing this...on the RSVP card write in how many seats have been reserved for them
