My friend just had her shower recently and we were talking about why people don't shop off the registries. She received a bunch of gifts from stores she wasn't registered at for things she didn't need. Now she has to run around and return these things. Why do people do that?

I think some people re-gifted because they gave gifts that were purchased from the place THEY were registered at with no gift receipt but a sticker on the item from that store.

Brian is worse then a woman I think. He told me when we add stuff to the registry next year (like linens and stuff) people better buy off it because that is why we registered so they know what we like and what we need and want. He is very set on the registry. He doesnt want to spend days running back to stores to exchange or return items.

I think everyone ends up having a handful of people who don't shop off the registry.

Re: Why do people NOT shop off someone's registry?
I think so too. It is after all a list of suggested gifts.
For my shower, a lot of people checked the registry and then bought registry items somewhere else. Apparently there was a HUGE sale on our flatware pattern b/c we got 18 of them at the shower! I am all for saving money, but I would have liked it if they called fortunoffs and asked them to reduce the registry.
I also got a BBQ gift bag which is funny since we live in an apt. We kept the sauce & the cookbook, gave the utensils to my sister and I use the bag as a giant tote for crops

My FI went to one of the stores that we were registered at and bought stuff that was not on our registry!! Infact it was decorations that we already had in our apartment!

Christine I am with you, I am all for saving money but please call my stores that I registered and tell them to reduce the number.
I have a long way to go before my bridal shower and I cant wait to see what fun stuff I get because I have some crazy friends and family

We got some really cool gifts too. My mom made a shower box with our wedding invitation and my friend made a cross stitch with our names and our wedding date.

Im guilty of this. Unless the couple is poor (as in, cant afford household items themselves), I always feel like buying off the registry is a big cop out. I only use at as a last resort.
I think people are happy with the gifts Ive given. I spent A LOT of time thinking of them and trying to give them something they will really appreciate.

I think people like to give what they want to give, not what the bride actually needs. It is frustrating, especially after you spend all that time registering, but they had good intentions!

Sonicstef: I mean the people who buy from a different store that they didn't register at and decide to just pick out anything. If it is something that someone thinks up and its original, I think those can be the best gifts. I just hate when you get something odd that you didn't ask for.

Sue: I dont get that either. If you are going to get a mindless gift, go to the god@mn registered stores.
Honestly, I think people that do that are re-gifting.

I think so too. The people who got gifts that weren't on the registry happened to have gotten them from the store THEY were registered at.

Isn't the registry just a list of suggested items, the bride and groom like. When I made out a Christmas list when I was younger, I got other stuff, it wasn't just the items on the list.

I kind of lucked out.. The people who didn't shop off of my registry got me some wonderful stuff...
Theresa did all my awesome baskets of things I'd never would have thought of and to boot the most memorable gifts there!
My aunt got us a handmade bridal bedspread...
A couple of my gf's got us a whole bunch of items from Tiffany's, who doesn't love that..
I got some stuff from Pottery Barn, another great store...
and Todd's cousin got me a massage at a spa near my office.. =)

Re: Why do people NOT shop off someone's registry?
My neighbor doesn't shop off of registries on purpose so she can save a buck. She got all mad when I said that she should just set an amount to spend in her head and pick something off the registry for that price. Very annoying!

Shel: Thats what I think too. I use the registry to get an idea of the style and colors, etc.. Its not the be all, end all.
