Why do people NOT shop off someone's registry?

Original post by NovemberSue

My friend just had her shower recently and we were talking about why people don't shop off the registries. She received a bunch of gifts from stores she wasn't registered at for things she didn't need. Now she has to run around and return these things. Why do people do that?

Thats what happened to me. A bunch of people decided to buy us something that wasn't on the registry and we didn't need it. We already had it and now we have 3 of them. They are growing dust now. I know they meant well but we weren't able to return them without a receipt.

I think MOST of them(not all) do it because they are cheap and they probably feel that they can get something else that is just as nice but much cheaper. Sorry..I am just Bias because this is what my Fis cheap family did to me.

How can you return the gifts? Did you ask what store they came from? Do you ask for the receipt...I just couldn't do that I would feel funny

I think we should bring all our duplicate gifts we couldn't return to our next GTG. I'm sure someone else needs these things.

I've gotten those too in a very tiny size that half of me couldn't even fit into.

We registered because everyone told me we *had* to, personally I think they are awfully obnoxious, kinda like 'Get me this, because I won't be happy with anything else'

And I think older guests to whom this whole registry idea is still sort of new, feel the same way. Alot of them did not buy from the registry... actually, I just realized neither did my mother.

I loved all of our gifts, from the registry or not. And I am guilty of not buying from registries too. Sometimes I just have a great gift in mind, if not, I'll go to the registry.

In fact (*waiting to pummeled with rocks and garbage*) sometimes I do not have the registry items removed ON PURPOSE because I don't want registry peekers to know what they got until they open it!

I think everyone feels bad about registering but you do it for a reason. You don't want to end up with 6 boxes of corningware or 10 sets of glasses.
I think as long as you buy a gift with that person's taste in mind, going without using the registry is fine with a gift receipt in case they already have it unless its a basket you made up for them.

Maybe the gifts that people buy off the registry are things they think the bride will need.

I registered because it is practical to do so, but I thought the whole concept was wierd. I like to personalize gifts, and use my head and heart when buying someone a gift, so I sometimes go off the registry.

I hope that when I have done this, people have not complained that I didn't get them the dishes they wanted instead.

At my cousin's shower, she got tons of LENOX FRAMES!

Now I bought her a frame too - but it was because I put a picture of us at 5 years old in it so that worked. But she was like 'what am I going to do with all these friggen yellow and gold fames' Good question

a registry is great for the people who dont have time to think up creative gifts, or just want to get the gift, knowing you'll like it and be done...

i dont mind non registry gifts... i just hope i dont get towels cause i registered for nice fluffy soft ones...
