Why do SMOKERS get a gazillion 'cigarette' breaks a day?
One of the other posts (on strealing company time) reminded me of how us non-smokers at work would take our 'chit-chat' breaks and get questioned while the smokers took their 'needed' 5 cigarette breaks a day! How can this be fair ???
So we started our 'non-smokers' breaks! and the boss never said a word when we used that 'Excuse'
Does everyone still see this alot @ work ?
Sorry smokers, dont throw cigarette butts at me!

I see it all day.
We are alowed 2 15 minute breaks a day. I hardly ever take mine, but others go above and beyond what they are allowed

The non-smokers at my job take 'cigarette break' each day too!

same thing at my office!! The smokers just come and go as they please and I do not have time to take my 15 min breaks!

my old firm the smokers would have office mates cover for them. the office mates would tell the boss that the person was in the bathroom, ate some bad sushi or something. then would come back in, brush their teeth, slap on some cologne and go see the boss.
that annoyed me....
But if I needed a breather I would just tell my boss look I need 5 minutes to myself, a bit of fresh air.
She was cool about that because I literally would just go outside, walk around the block, then come back up.

Melissa, Im the same, I was content with a walk and some fresh air.
No brushing of teeth can hide the wonderful SCENT of a cigarette-freshly-smoked-smoker !

oh, you better beleive I took my breaks as often as they did (or I tried ! ) I just made my breaks productive and ran errands as I got my fresh air ! =) I couldnt even bear to stand next to them to chat because its just overwhelming to even breathe in that space! and that's got to stop - how smokers take up that ten foot radius of the entry-way of a building! Its the most annoying thing to WALK THROUGH this tunnel of SMOKE to get into a building! ( I especially loved it when I was going to my OB when prego! )
oh and one job I had, they had a smoke-room and it was gross to even walk by the room!
Thank Goodness that John doesnt smoke, we have a smoke-free home. I hated living with my parents, where I didnt even realized that all my clothes stunk of cig smoke till I moved out !

technically, everyone should be given the same breaks - our dept was always pretty consistent with this when I was a smoker - I'd only go out twice a day, but was back in 2 mins (I was on the first floor). My non smoker coworkers would then be sure to take a coffee/water break at some point during the day as well - it should be fair!

anna - believe it or not I think (or maybe this changed) but there were a few loopholes in the laws on smoking in office buildings - if there are less than 15 ppl or something, you can smoke behind a closed door. Not exactly sure on the details, or whether it changed recently - if not it should by now though!

Obviously this doesn't happen at my job, but at the store Patrick manages on his days off, the employees ask for at least 5 smoking breaks a shift! He gets annoyed because work piles up and gets neglected, but he still lets them go. A 5 minute break then turns into 20. I keeping telling him they can smoke on their lunch and 'coffee' breaks, but he feels bad saying no to smoke breaks. Oh well...

I hate when they go out to smoke at it's 10 min to five! can't wait the 10 min??? and no, these people do NOT work past 5pm

It’s so funny to find this thread this morning because I was just saying to my boss I wanted to go out yesterday for a fresh air break because it was so nice out, and he replied, yeah, but first you have to get past all the smoke from the smokers taking their breaks!! So much for fresh air. But I agree. I am not a smoker, and I don’t take breaks (unless of course my trip to the potty counts as a break). I am not even a coffee drinker, so I don’t take coffee breaks. But in all fairness I will be trying to take a refresher break every other hour or so. Maybe it’ll de-stress me

AS a former smoker I have to say that you are TOTALLY RIGHT!!
At my fomer job we were allotted 2- 15 minute breaks. However I never abused that. I think it's probably cause I worked in the Exec office, so my xtra breaks would have been very much noticed.
My favorites were the smokers who would literally break down there 15 minutes breaks. ' I smoked 1/2 a cig took 3 minutes therefore I have 12 minutes left of my morning break I can use throught the day' W*T*F?

It's weird that this thread was started because - I think about it EVERYDAY!!! As I sit at my desk working my butt off and people leave for 15minutes 3-4 times a day for 'cig.. breaks' ... why should they get rewarded for being addicted to cigs? They should let all of us 'non-smokers' leave early for all that time not taken!

I am a smoker, but that would annoy me too. I work in a school, so we don't have the luxury of taking breaks any time we want. I go out once a day for my lunch, so I sneak one in then, but that's it for 7 hours. It's better for me anyway, so I am glad I don't have the luxury...
By the way, I have mastered the art of covering up the smoke scent on my breath and clothes, because I would never ever want the kids to know I smoke. In 3 years, not one child has ever said anything to me, and those who work with kids know they are BLUNT!!!
