There are no fees that incur with using a travel agent. We used one for our HM just because it was easier and one less thing on our end to do. Its up to you...if you want to plan it yourself you can, otherwise let them take care of it for you.

It depends on the type of vacation. I've booked many times through Expedia, but for our HM it was a lot cheaper to go to a Travel Agent. There's no extra cost to hire one. They usually get deals and help through hotels, airlines, etc for suggesting them. Try Expedia and the walk into any Travel Agent (usually Liberty Travel is pretty good) and see what prices they give you. You don't have to pay or sign anything to just hear the info and prices they'll give you. You can also haggle a little to get a better price. Good luck!

because if anything goes wrong they will take care of it all...ALot of times things do happen and a person has to all of a sudden pick a new place to go to...well the agent will do it all for you...They also know the hotels and areas well, so they can recommend things to you and what to do there.

In addition to what the other ladies wrote, they can sometimes find better deals than you can. My FH and I may use one to help us plan hawaii even though we are using a time share- they may be able to find a great deal on flights!

I used to be a travel agent....

A lot of times Agency's will acquire discounts from resorts and such that enables them to put together a good package for clients. Several years ago, the airlines cut TA's commissions and its been rough. You have to become a wholesaler and sell bulk seats. So.. what happens a lot.. is a TA will know all the people that have the bulk fares and book thru them to save you money as well.
Also... if there are any changes the TA will take care of everything for you.

Dont forget ... you can also get Vacation Insurance which is not a lot of money....but is worth it if you are going to say.. the tropics during hurricane season, or you have ANY reason to think you may need to make changes to your itinerary ( sick family member or the like) ...

Having said that... I usually book online with the airline myself unless its a 'package' Im looking for. .. then its a TA

I dont like booking packages thru like 'orbitz'.. for several reasons.. 1). NON refundable/ changeable/ cancelable.. 2) full paypayment up front for every thing... 3) .. its harder to get upgrades for hotel rooms, cars...etc. since they are a wholesaler, I always get the feeling that I get treated poorly by the hotels and cars and I ALWAYS ended up with really bad seats on the air.

Just my .02 cents... LOL

Sometimes a travel agent will beat the lowest price you've found...or atleast match it. For example the lowest price for our honeymoon was from discount-all-inclusive.com and I found a travel agent who beat that...plus I had already spoken to her ont he phone, so I felt like if anything goes wrong, I know exactly who my contact is.
