I think it's the age old issue of putting others down to make yourself look and feel better...even though is generally backfires! I guess that falls under the self esteem realm doesn't it?

I agree with all of the above.... It has to do with insecurity issues and making yourself look/feel better at the expense of others.

I think because they are so unhappy with who they are and how they turned out with their life they have to bash you ..
I can think of a few people who also talk about others and think WE DON'T KNOW!

Well when FH and I talk about his friends gf behind her back its because she's a miserable person. She's a B*tch and annoying and no one likes her... not because of insecurity. (not saying that you guys are like her, just that there are different ways and reasons to talk about people)
So, yes, IF its unwarranted then its because of jealousy and insecurity. But some people deserve it hehehe.

I have found that most refuse to admit they do it, and do it to get attention and actually try to get more friends by doing it. Eventually they lose those friends however, for the very reasons they gained them.

IMO I think this is a negative question. People who waste good energy discussing others probably have nothing better to do, but who cares. People all talk, men and women a like, could we please discuss something on a more positive note ??

I definately agree with all of the above- and most of the time, these woman do it when they are in their little 'cliques'. I can't stand cliques. We aren't in high school anymore.
