I just don't like my makeup when makeup artists do it. the only makeover that was really good was chanel counter in roosevelt field mall (which is far from where i live) but all the other makeup counters always put way too much eyeliner on me or its too thick. I always end up going home and re-doing what they did haha. i'm really picky i guess because i am a makeup person. does anyone else have this issue with getting your makeup done at the counters in the malls?

Re: why don't i like makeup artists
from a makeup artists point of view, i think counters are very different than if u go to a private artist or have someone come to ur house for a trial..
my artist came to me for a trial & literally spent HOURS with me..we even fed her dinner! lol she did an initial look, i told her what i liked, didn't like, etc.. then she took things off, did things differently, etc., and kept going untill i was happy. to me - that's what a trial is for.
At a counter, the artists have very strict time restraints..and while they'll do their best to make u look fabulous - their job is to get it done as quickly as possible so they can move on to the next customer. i work in a boutique - and when it's busy we need to get customers up & out within 1/2 hour... counters are probably even more strained w/this especially if it's busy..PLUS they have to try to get u to purchase.
my advice would be to find an artist that can come to u, or is private within her home or salon. M*i*a is fabulous.that's who i used. also - bring a picture, tell them up front what u don't want..and above all - speak up if when all is said & done u don't like something..that's why it's a trial! that's what u're paying for! and like i said, u dont always get this at a counter..esp. if it's busy.
hth!

thanks! i guess i'll try one of those private makeup artists that come to you. i really don't want to spend a lot of money to get my makeup done on my wedding day when i do a pretty good job myself since i used to work for a large makeup company and i got to practice a lot. we'll see how it goes though, maybe i will like it.

I agree with the previous person that the make up counter people have a different motive than people who you hire to do a make up trial. Most of the make up counters want you to try something, like it and buy it...and all in a limited amount of time.
That being said, it is hard to find a make up artist who will listen well. I have had two trials with different people, and I got the same look, eventhough it was not what I asked for. I am not really a make up person, so I wanted something very natural, and I keep getting dark, smoky eyes and lots of caked on make up. There are many pics on LIW from girls that have different looks, take a look around and see what you like, then call their person. Good luck!

oooo you should try chanel if you do not like makeup that feels caked on because their makeup is really good quality and it never feels caked on...it pretty natural. haha i should really just go to the chanel counter at the roosevelt field mall and tell the woman i worked with that she is just going to have to come out by me and do my makeup for my wedding because i don't like anyone else haha but seriously try someone who uses chanel!

Re: why don't i like makeup artists
I agree with you about the make-up counter artists. I have been to a few Sephora that gives out mini-make overs and it's horrible. They use so many bright colors for their make-up. Even when you specifically point out you don't like bright colors or you point to the colors you like, they end up choosing bold colors. My BBF went there also to find the right make-up to attend to a wedding. She specify her hair pin had some sparkly green rhinestones. And not only did they deck out with the green make-up (she has olive skin) but they went on to pick out the brightest orange lip color claiming it was the new trend. It was a nightmare. When they advertise the make-up products used, the basket always end up costing over $100. So, I guess it's part of their job to do the make-over and to sell as much products. I have bad experience with hiring an actual make-up artist as well. The one I had for my wedding had more experience with fashion shows than bridal work (false advertisement on portfolio). My mistake was booking everything instead of doing the trial first. From a lot of the reviews, it seems like Macy's & Bloomingdale has the best make-up counter artists. So maybe I would try those places and see if they're good.
