Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
Platinum is stronger and sturdier. It is SAFER for a diamond because of this. You can feel it - it's heavier if you feel it in your hand.

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
Platinum is harder, stronger and more durable... I honestly can say that I've had my ring for a year and the platinum looks as shiny as it did when I got it...
I thought white gold is the one where it will turn.......
I could be wrong

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
It is more expensive.. I love platinum, both my rings are platinum, I think the only differences are the weight, and the fact that platinum doesn't turn .. white gold turns after a while.. but to be honest, platinum gets soo darn scratched and the gold (white or yellow) holds up a lot better..

platinum is more expensive then gold because it is a rarer metal.

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
Most of the time white gold is yellow gold that is dipped and it wears off and usually has to be re-dipped. Especially rings.
Platinum may scratch more than white gold but if you get it polished then its back to new.

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
There are pro's and con's to both. I wouldn't necessarily say one is 'better' than the other...just different characteristics. It is recommened that the prongs that hold your diamond be made of platnium since it is more durable and will hold your diamond more securely. Many girls get platnium prongs and white gold for the rest of the ring. It is really a matter of cost. Yes, platnium is more durable, but does get scratched. White gold is not as strong but scratches can be buffed away and it can be 'redipped' as other mentioned.

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
I'd definately say Platinum IS better.
White Gold
White gold is an alloy of gold and white metals. White metals such as silver, nickel, palladium and platinum change the color of gold to a white color.
The properties of the white gold will vary depending upon which metals were mixed and the proportions used. Therefore, white gold alloys can be custom made for specific purposes, for example, alloys using nickel are very hard and strong and can be used for rings and pins. White alloys using palladium are softer and more pliable and can be used for settings to hold gemstones.
White gold is not strictly speaking white, it is a grey steel-like color which is treated to make the article look white. The treatment used is an electroplate of another metal called rhodium. Rhodium plating makes the finished white gold article look white, but unfortunately is wears off and the plating should be replaced approximately once a year.
Platinum
Platinum on the other hand is a white metal. Platinum is used as an almost pure metal, approximately 95% pure, whereas white gold is only 75% pure in 18ct and only 58.5% pure in 14ct.
Being a naturally white metal, platinum does not need the rhodium treatment, because it starts off white and will always stay white.
Platinum is more dense (heavier) than gold. You can feel a noticeable difference in weight between the same article made in platinum and gold.
Platinum’s best property as far as jewelry is concerned is its abrasive resistance. Platinum rings and in particular platinum claws will still be in great condition many years after the equivalent gold article is worn away. This is quite amazing when you consider that platinum is relatively soft and bends more easily than gold.
Summary of Platinum’s properties · natural white color · looks better than white gold when it is old and scratched · feels heavier than gold · will wear better and last longer than gold · is more expensive

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
Platinum scratches can be buffed out to a brand new finish in about 2 minutes by your jeweler. Platinum is a soft metal when it comes to surface scratches, but the most durable and safest for a diamond because it absolutely does not bend..this is why a lot of platinum settings are 4 prong, it can handle it. You can have a platinum band buffed over and over again with no risk of hurting the strength of a ring.

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
There are different grades of platinum though - if your ring is stamped 'plat' on the inside, it's 95% or higher pure platinum. Anything other than 'plat' will have other metals mixed in, like if it says '850plat' I think it's 85% platinum.

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?
Mine says PT900 in it. My boss's says PT950. She's an attorney so maybe it's more $$
My jeweler told me that platinum starts out shiny, get dull for a little while and then becomes shiny again naturally after x amount of time. She also said that she would only buff it for special occasions (like my wedding) because too much polishing and buffing of platinum is not good for it - wears it away or something?
