I use to work for garden city jewlery store(where i got my ring at discount)....

Platinum is a stronger material than gold. If you scratch the platinum it is suppose to stay in the band and resurface as the other girl said. The gold will come off.
this is important feature for girls like me who wear the e-ring and constantly bang their band against a surface, my aunt does that to her gold e-ring and the ring is no longer circular shaped

the silver type color it has will stay, whereas if you get white gold(it is yellow gold mixed with other metals) and over timethe white gold will start to get a yellowing look to it.

Platinum comes in two types PLAT950 and PLAT900
that is the purity of the platinum meaning how much of other metal is mixed in with it.(just as 24k has more gold than 14k,Plat950 has more platinum than plat900)

Its really personaly preference for what you want but platinum is the better material for the long run. It doesnt cost too much more than gold

I work in a jewelry manufacturing place.
The difference between your gold and platinum is that,
Platinum is a softer metal.
I did not choose platinum for my ring b/c i have a high tiffany setting. My cousin banged her ring against something with her platinum ring and broke a prong.

Basically get what you like

And platinum is 3x as much as gold.
Closing market for today is
Gold $325 per oz.
Platinum $619 oz.

Platinum is not softer than gold. It's harder. And there are more than just 900 and 950 plat.

Taken from a website:

Part of platinum's appeal lies in the fact that it dulls very little over time and never tarnishes. Platinum is a hypo-allergenic metal that will not irritate the skin. Most platinum jewelry is 95 percent pure platinum, and 5 percent iridium or palladium alloy. For guaranteed quality in platinum, look for the marks 900Pt, 950 Plat, or Plat. Below are the explanations for the marks you see in platinum:

950 parts or more per thousand of pure platinum can be marked 'Platinum' without the use of any qualifying statements;
850 to 950 parts per thousand can be marked in accordance with international standards of '950 Plat.' or '950 Pt.,' '900 Plat.'or '900 Pt.,'
'850 Plat.' or '850 Pt.' (the revised guide permits the use of a two or four letter abbreviation for platinum);
500 parts per thousand of pure platinum and at least 950 parts per thousand platinum group metals can be marked with the parts per thousand of pure platinum, followed by the parts per thousand of each platinum group metal (example: '600Plat.350Irid.' or '600Pt.350Ir.'; and
less than 500 parts per thousand pure platinum cannot be marked with the word platinum or any abbreviation thereof.

IMHO, its tough and durable. We got platinum wedding bands although it costs more but worth it. My e-ring is gold because DH wants to save money with all our wedding and housing expenses. However, for our 10 year wedding anniversary DH will get me a platinum diamond ring.

Re: Why is platinum better than white gold?

Ok let me explain

Pure platinum (999) has a hardness of 50HV

950 Platinum with Iridium, has a hardness of 80HV and is used by many on line stores and usually they are offered at a really low price.

Although not as strong as platinum, White gold hardness can range from 130HV - 220HV depending what kt.
Obviously hardness and durability are not one and the same thing. This is where platinum come into play. An '80' hardness will dent much faster than a '125' or '110' hardness.

Everyone should just check out information online this way when you go to shop for your ring, you know what you're talking about and get the best for your $$.
