Some doctors really are idiots and if they dont give you the answers you want then go get a second opinion and demand to get tests done on you.
My dad has been real sick for a week, he went to the doctor, which i don't like this doctor and never understood why my dad went to him. He did one test on my dad and thats it...for a week my dad has been having chest pains, he was real pale, and even walking to the bathroom would tire him out...now my dad is a person who is loud, always out and about so this was unusual...well last night my mother came upstairs to tell me my dad fainted so i ran downstairs. WHen he woke up he was very weak and didn't even have energy to talk. We called the ambulance and went to the hospital...they did a bunch of tests on him and one problem is that his cholesterol is insanely high...but the human body is supposed to have 16 quarts of blood and he only had 6 so he had to have a blood transfusion. He is feeling better now from that of course and got his color back and isn't dizzy or as weak...they have to still keep him for 24 hours bc after a transfusion they have to monitor you and now theyre going to run a bunch of tests on him.
The only thing his doc had given him were digestion pills, he should've kept on him and asked why they aren't doing more tests.

Re: why you should always ask your doctor questions
I'm sorry about your Dad....some doctors are like people and very narrow minded and have tunnel vision and never think outside the box. Not good when you are a doctor and dealing with different people and situations all the time.
Hope your Dad (and you) are feeling better.

OMG I hope your dad is feeling better. Its a shame that you go to a doctor thinking you are gettng the best of care and you only find out they really dont pay attention to the obvious. Plus most men dont go to doctors until they are really sick and thats a problem too.
I hope dad a speedy recovery
YES!!!! thats the problem...my dad also waits too long to go. He should've gone months ago and only went last week. He said yesterday hes been losing alot of blood. I don't understand these men

it's so true... my dad went to the ER yesterday b/c he had bronchitis, pneumonia and a cough that would not go away so they finally gave him steroids but he has a heart condition and he's 72 so we all freak out whenever he gets sick - he actually switched drs b/c his was too busy and only gave him cough syrup and DIDN'T do an xray
I hope your dad is okay - he needs a new doctor!! How did he end up losing all that blood though?
OMG is your dad ok now? You can't mess around with pneumonia. The only other time my dad was in the hospital was years ago and it was bc of pneumonia. He had 109 fever and was in ICU for a week. His happened quickly though bc he had gotten sick on a friday and by saturday around 6pm we had to call the ambulance bc he was delirious and didn't know what was going on.
He must've had some internal bleeding, its probably the many years of constant stomach problems...he said hes had a bloody stool for 3 months so thats probably a big reason.
Hope your dad gets well soon

i know. my two sisters had pneumonia in the past year - one had a really bad case. now my dad's, though not as bad. my mom said he's sounding much better with the steroids. I literally hung up with him the other day and started crying b/c he sounded like he was dying but i think he'll be okay.
that's crazy - 3 months!! i know you said it already but why do men wait so long to get these things checked out? i'd freak if that were me and call the dr right away!

Re: why you should always ask your doctor questions
I lost a lot of respect for doctors a few years ago. A lot of what they do is a guessing game and if you don't insist on them doing more tests they will just send you home sick as a dog.
I was told that my stomach pains were 'psychological'. They were brought on by stress. It was ln in my head. I needed to see a therapist they said.
This went on for 8 months -- yes, 8 months of a pain that came and went like contractions. My stomach was always burning. Finally, I started missing work and I put my foot down. I wanted an MRI. Well they sent me for an abdominal sonogram instead and found 22 GALL STONES. I had advanced gallbladder disease and they even suspected that I might have gall bladder cancer. That same week I had my surgery and I was actually looking forward to it because I knew it would be the end of my pain. Turns out I did not have cancer and they never did figure out why a young girl with no weight issues or family history of gall bladder problems ended up with such a severe case. I'll never forget the look on the doctor's face when I said, 'I thought you said it was all in my head'
Get a second opinion. Get a third. They obviously know more about the human body than we do but they are not God.

I'm so glad your dad is ok! But seriously I know what you're saying....it took my mom months of complaining to her doctor about how she was feeling for them to realize she had cancer. The reason they finally caught it was because my mom got a pnemonia and they took a chest x-ray. Otherwise the doctor wouldnt have done anything and in my opinion if they would have listened to her and caught it sooner...maybe she'd still be here today.
The worst part is...I have the same doctor so anytime I feel weird or something is wrong I MAKE SURE she knows even though half the time she rolls her eyes at me!
But yea, I glad your dad is good and feeling better!!!!!

WOW, Denise that is horrible and very scary I am sure. I am glad he is feeling better now. What would cause someone to have such a low amount of blood? I have never heard of that before. Please keep us updated
well my dad has HORRIBLE stomach problems and has for years. He's been on so many things for it. He had a colonoscopy done last week which came out fine. But he said hes been having a bloody stool for 3 months AND he told the doctor this. The loss of blood could be from that. He might have had internal bleeding.
Thanks for the information. I am a little bit of a hypochondriac and I always want to know ALL the details. Now that he is in the hospital he should get the care that he needs and deserves. Again, please keep us all updated and how are you feeling from your surgery?
oh i understand, i am a hypochondriac too and go to the doctor often. I'd rather go get tests done and find out it was nothing rather than letting it go and by waiting making it worse.
Yeah he already feels alot better. I am guessing the loss of so much blood was the big factor obviously. Hes not pale anymore, he got up before with the iv machine to walk around a bit and he isn't getting tired anymore. Its what he needed right now but i am glad we decided to call the ambulance last night. At first my dad said to wait and see how he feels but then even after a few mins of me and my mom telling him to call an ambulance he agreed.
I am doing well...the first day is the only day i had discomfort but very mild. They gave me pain killers and i havent even taken any. I hate pain killers and how i feel on them so if i wasnt in pain didn't think it was necessary.

Now if you are a female and go to the doctor with certain pains thats one of the first things they ask. When i had side pains that was one of the first things they looked for. My other friend was sent home when she wasn't feeling well and a few days later was rushed to the ER and had to have surgery

OMG that is crazy...i just posted above about my friends story and thats EXACTLY what happened. She had a cyst burst and they didn't even know, they misdiagnosed her.
I don't know but bc of all these stories and seeing people i know go through this i feel i had to post and hope people who are reading this and have been having problems with no answers go get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion. If you feel not enough was done then ask to get tests done.

My mom had a mammogram a few years ago. She was told that the results possibly indicated that she had breast cancer. She went to another facility for a 2nd exam. Turns out the first mammo machine was like dirty or something and it looked like cancer but it was like a smudge on the image!!!! My poor mother was crying her eyes out and it was a faulty machine. They actually wrote my mother a letter of apology.
As you can see, I don't have a lot of faith in the medical community.

This is why I hate doctors!! I've heard this story way too many times!!! FMIL just had a similar experience (without the transfusion). Doctors are paid so much and just don't take the time to talk to patients. I feel like you're better off going on WebMD so you can go to the doctor armed with some knowledge. That's what I do.
sorry about your FMIL, i hope she is ok.
Well thats why its good hes in the hospital now, sometimes its better off just doing this. The doctor there is having every test run on him. I know people hate being in the hospital but at least you know they'll do every test possible and find out whats wrong with you.
Yup, def better to have all the tests done and at hospitals there are so many doctors, thay can refer to each other for opinions.
