Some doctors really are idiots and if they dont give you the answers you want then go get a second opinion and demand to get tests done on you.
My dad has been real sick for a week, he went to the doctor, which i don't like this doctor and never understood why my dad went to him. He did one test on my dad and thats it...for a week my dad has been having chest pains, he was real pale, and even walking to the bathroom would tire him out...now my dad is a person who is loud, always out and about so this was unusual...well last night my mother came upstairs to tell me my dad fainted so i ran downstairs. WHen he woke up he was very weak and didn't even have energy to talk. We called the ambulance and went to the hospital...they did a bunch of tests on him and one problem is that his cholesterol is insanely high...but the human body is supposed to have 16 quarts of blood and he only had 6 so he had to have a blood transfusion. He is feeling better now from that of course and got his color back and isn't dizzy or as weak...they have to still keep him for 24 hours bc after a transfusion they have to monitor you and now theyre going to run a bunch of tests on him.
The only thing his doc had given him were digestion pills, he should've kept on him and asked why they aren't doing more tests.

Re: why you should always ask your doctor questions
Sorry to hear about your dad...I hope he feels 100% better soon...This is why I tell my mom all the time to get a new doctor...it is horrible that something like this had to happen

Hope your dad feels better!!
This is why I hate doctors!! I've heard this story way too many times!!! FMIL just had a similar experience (without the transfusion). Doctors are paid so much and just don't take the time to talk to patients. I feel like you're better off going on WebMD so you can go to the doctor armed with some knowledge. That's what I do.
sorry about your FMIL, i hope she is ok.
Well thats why its good hes in the hospital now, sometimes its better off just doing this. The doctor there is having every test run on him. I know people hate being in the hospital but at least you know they'll do every test possible and find out whats wrong with you.
Yup, def better to have all the tests done and at hospitals there are so many doctors, thay can refer to each other for opinions.
very true. Last night the doctor who saw my dad asked him all the questions necessary, by getting answers from my dad he was able to eliminate some conclusions and come to others. He even said he might also be anemic and my mom was like oh no i dont think he is shes another one who thinks shes a doctor and i told her he never got tested for that so we don't know if he is or isn't, to let them do the tests whats the harm. Yeah the doctor called my mom at 4am after my dad has the transfusion and to also let her know he was anemic. This doctor also didn't want to take chances so he said theyre going to do every test on him

I lost a lot of respect for doctors a few years ago. A lot of what they do is a guessing game and if you don't insist on them doing more tests they will just send you home sick as a dog.
I was told that my stomach pains were 'psychological'. They were brought on by stress. It was ln in my head. I needed to see a therapist they said.
This went on for 8 months -- yes, 8 months of a pain that came and went like contractions. My stomach was always burning. Finally, I started missing work and I put my foot down. I wanted an MRI. Well they sent me for an abdominal sonogram instead and found 22 GALL STONES. I had advanced gallbladder disease and they even suspected that I might have gall bladder cancer. That same week I had my surgery and I was actually looking forward to it because I knew it would be the end of my pain. Turns out I did not have cancer and they never did figure out why a young girl with no weight issues or family history of gall bladder problems ended up with such a severe case. I'll never forget the look on the doctor's face when I said, 'I thought you said it was all in my head'
Get a second opinion. Get a third. They obviously know more about the human body than we do but they are not God.
omg that is crazy. I am so sorry you had to deal with that for 8 months but thank god in the end they figured it out. I can imagine the doctors face when you told him
I don't know lately i keep hearing of these stories. I am the type of person though if i dont like my doctors answers i get a new one, if i feel they're not doing all they can i just can't take it. A few months ago 2 of my friends ended up in the hospital the same week. One of them had horrible stomach pains she went to the doc and they told her it was an ulcer gave her meds for that but the pain wouldn't go away. 3 weeks later the pain got worse and she said f*ck that and went to the ER, turns out she had a cyst burst. Now if you are a female and go to the doctor with certain pains thats one of the first things they ask. When i had side pains that was one of the first things they looked for. My other friend was sent home when she wasn't feeling well and a few days later was rushed to the ER and had to have surgery
it IS crazy. Can you just imagine how many people have died because of this same nonsense? It's truly disgusting!
i can only imagine. I mean just look at this thread of how many incidents there were and thats just among a few of us. I mean imagine how many more there are

You ever watch that show 'House'? He's a brilliant doctor who never gives up until he finds out what's really going on with a patient. Why can't they all be like that...

I KNOW!!! i always say that. Thats how they all should be, all doctors should want to find out the answers and not just tell people thats its all in their head.

I hope all goes well and your dad has a speedy recovery and yes most doctors just don't care about their jobs enough to warrant them to be paid as much as they do. This is why our medical costs are so high is because of idiots like that.

I was just thinking the same thing! There are a lot of horror stories out there.
I know a friend of a friend who was misdiagnosed as having the HIV virus. He's a train conductor and he tried to jump in front a train. He was stopped by a co-worker. Well, turns they make you take more than one test and the 2nd test came back negative. So then he went for a 3rd and it's negative. The first test was a mix-up in the lab. He almost KILLED himself. I thought he should have sued the hell out of them but he just let it go.

Hope everything is better with your dad. It's the worst feeling when your dad is sick. Mine has had a lot of ups and downs, but luckily right now he is doing ok.

Denise I am glad to hear your dad is doing better -- I can only imagine how scared you must have all been.
Thank God he is doing better. Unfortunately there are so many of these stories out there.
Just this morning my coworker was telling me of a misdiagonis from her doctor (she has been ill for months and was out again all last week) and she hit the nail on the head with something her father told her ....
'It is called the 'PRACTICE of Medicine' for a reason.' Scary but true.
