stay at home when you have children or a child? Perhaps you will stay home for the first couple of years and then go back to work part time? What's your thoughts on this?

Can't do it here but I don't really see how you could do it anywhere without 2 incomes.

I'd really love to, but I don't know if it'll be possible. When FH was married before and they had their daughter he actually stayed home with her, that's an option.

I'm not sure what I am going to do yet. DH and I were discussing it last night and we agreed that my job as a bartender is going to be tough when I get to about 6mths. I will probably stop working then and will probably go back a to work a year or two later.

a STHM is totally do-able in many parts of the country. houses cost 1/2 or less of what they do here (for brand a new home!) and if your DH can earn the same as what he makes here, it's do-able

But the cost of housing is not the only barometer. Everything else costs the same around the country. Cars, food, furniture..gas for the most part.
I still don't think it's realistic to think that one average income roughly $50-60K could be enough to sustain a family comfortably anywhere.
If you make $80-100K then I would agree.

you don't even need to make a comparable salary when houses cost less...think of how much you have to make to buy a $600k house....then imagine all you need for a $250k house.....a $250k house in most parts of the US are super NICE!!!!! gotta convince FH to move away......
ETA-every bill i have went up when i moved to NY...my light bill, my phone bill, food...the $.15 here and there really add up to a lot. even going to a movie is far more expensive...i used to pay $6 for a night show....that might get me a kid's ticket on a tuesday afternoon!!

check out this great calaculator that CNN has. housing is definitely not the only thing that costs more here.

Yes, I am fortunate enough that with FH's working and SSI, I can stay home with our children. It's especially helpful since two of the three are special needs.

Re: Will any of you be fortunate enough to
Where I lived in TN. you could get a nice house in a great neighborhood for $150,000. Food is a little cheaper (especially eating out) and the rest of the household bills average a little lower. The best thing about that particular state is that there is no income tax.

Re: Will any of you be fortunate enough to
It's a shame, b/c we discussed moving out of state & living large (FH would get the same salary as he is now, no matter where he lives in US)....But we couldn't do that to our parents.
FH said I have the option to stay home, although he'd then be working 80 hour weeks
or
I can continue teaching & he'd work nights (& his mom would pick up the slack w/ the baby), but this is just in theory now...
