stay at home when you have children or a child? Perhaps you will stay home for the first couple of years and then go back to work part time? What's your thoughts on this?

Re: Will any of you be fortunate enough to
Luckily at my job, even after maternity leave is over, you can do what is called a gradual return and work part time 3 days a week for up to a year, that is what i will probably do. With prices of everything so high and our not so simple tastes, I dont think I will be able to quit

check out this great calaculator that CNN has. housing is definitely not the only thing that costs more here.
quick comparison based on 60K a year salary in NY - Comparable salary in Atlanta GA: $39,709.91
If you move from Nassau County NY to Atlanta GA...
Groceries will cost: 26.064% lower Housing will cost: 53.277% lower Utilities will cost: 36.977% lower Transportation will cost: 12.615% lower Healthcare will cost: 12.937% lower
i just did that for me and FH based on where i grew up...housing almost 60% lower...what was he thinking insisting on living here???
for winston-salem(where i grew up) Groceries will cost: 26.126% lower Housing will cost: 59.648% lower Utilities will cost: 38.374% lower Transportation will cost: 21.005% lower Healthcare will cost: 15.978% lower
This all works out if you make the same salary as your NY salary, but if you are making 35% less and your expenses are 31% less it's a wash. Not trying to debate the move out of NY thing because everyone does what's good for them and that's great but you would definitely need the NY salary or close to it to make a difference or to make being a STHM possible. Otherwise, it's the same thing.

from what I have heard and know, it's really not all that difficult to maintain a 'NY salary' when you move.
I'm referring specifically to what DH and I earn. we could definitely make the same if we moved down south.

Ok, then to be a STAHM you would have to live on one salary. That means your DH would have to make more than he does here if you require two incomes here.
I guess it's different for everyone, but I could not make even close to the salary I get here. About 1/2! DH as well. That's from my preliminary research. I know people how have moved with their salaries and some who haven't. There were some who moved with their Ny salary got transfered and had their moving expenses paid for too..now that's sweet!
I also know people who have moved and moved back! You really have to do the financial analysis to take the plunge and move out of state.

I know what you mean. MY FH wants me to stay at home if we have kids, but I don't think I would want to. I would want to work part time.

Re: Will any of you be fortunate enough to
NEVER... FH just lost his job, may take us a few years to recover from that as it is, plus he has 2 kids already - there is no way anyone can have one income in LI unless hubby makes a S-load of moola!!!

I was going to have to go back to work but I was offered a stay at home job so now I can stay home. I am so excited. I can make up my own hours and I am going to be making more money at home then if I went back to my old job

I plan on working part time.
As for people who think they can make it on one income in Altanta, GA, you will be in for an 'harsh' awakening. Atlanta is not cheap.
I lived in the south for many years. While this is true that you can buy a house for much cheaper, so are the income also. And no... unless you are an executive or so... you won't make a ton of money.
And you are also paying for location. No beach near by, no big city, not same education.
