FH ran out to do some errands with my car before I have to go to school so I can finally write this.
Ok the e-party went beautifully except for one MAJOR problem...FH's 89 year old grandfather got TRASHED at the party and HAD to be CARRIED across the room to his table. FMIL refused to take him home and he kept trying to get out of his seat so he was practically falling over and asking to lie down IN A NICE RESTAURANT in front of about 30 people.
Well FMIL was apparently supposed to be watching him but she was so busy being a ditz and running around ruining my photos (she INSISTED on taking HER photos when people were trying to take mine so EVERYONE is looking at her camera and NOT mine)
My parents are FURIOUS they believed that they ruined the whole party. FH had to call them to apologize for his mothers and grandfathers behavior (she refused to bring him home) instead of apologizing to my parents she tells him oh he is on medication and only had 1 glass of wine. Friends and waiters told my parents he had 6 and he downed each one in ONE gulp. He is not even supposed to be drinking.
She called my parents last night NOT to apologize but to say that her father was upset that he SLEPT thru part of the party (he eventually fell asleep at the table)
Needless to say my parents have told me that he is uninvited to the wedding, his mother is no longer welcome in our home nor is his grandfather. And right now they never want to see her again.
This could not have happened to a worse crowd - (my parents are ultra conservative). FH is SOOO embarressed about the whole incident his mother keeps saying oh it was no big deal. My parents have told FH that they don't feel that he was in any way responsible and that they still love him - and they mean it. But this event will forever stick in their minds - They are the type that NEVER forget something bad that happens FOREVER! They have BANNED his grandfather from the wedding and would like to ban his mother if they thought they could get away with it. I have finals coming up - my parents are now angry about EVERYTHING b/c of this incident and they keep bringing it up to me even after I asked them not to discuss it anymore (if you look at my photos in the background you can see his grandfather sleeping away and his mother scowling as usual
SHE told FH she didn't think it was a big deal.

that's a tough one. i can 100% see your parents point - they're probably thinking - 'if they acted like this at an e-party, can you imagine how they will act at a wedding'. that being said, i don't know how you can ban FH's grandfather from the wedding and not start a life-time of heartache for you and FI.
i'm so sorry you have to go through this. i wish i had better advice to offer.

FH is SO angry b/c she pulls crap like that all the time so he isn't speaking to her he doesn't want her there either. FH's grandfather has been banned from the communion party this weekend (FH's neice's party). Now we know why his mother is not welcome at FH's SIL's parents home

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that there is more than one way to react to this? Sure, the grandfather displayed poor behavior, but why does that have to ruin everyone elses experience? Its not like he is going to punch the bride at the wedding. So he was drunk and stupid, if its not him, it will be someone else at the wedding. He isn't an extra in your parents vision of the wedding, he is your FH's grandfather -- poor behavior and all. I'm really sorry that you have to deal with idiotic behavior -- on both sides of your family. I think you should take this all with a sense of humor, and try to get your parents to mellow out. And yes, you can kindly request that the grandfather not drink at the wedding.

Re: Will it never end! VENT and UPSET
Valenia normally I would agree with you on this - BUT he is on medication and has been told NOT to drink in the first place- this was a small atmosphere and he literally fell over and needed to be CARRIED - everyone came running over b/.c they thought this man was having a heart attack. HE was being loud and causing problems the matre' d wanted him brought home b/c the WAITERS thought he was causing a scene. FFIL (parents are divorced) sat there saying very loudly well your mother found a way to complete RUIN another party. The waiters feared he would throw up at the table he was that sick. he was falling out of his chair. My party friends said they have never seen a specticle like that before. He broke glasses trying to get up and then fell - I think they thought he would get hurt and sue.

Valenia - while I agree to a poingt...everyone has their threshold and it seems the groom's mother has a way of causing chaos quite often.....(hope I did not misunderstand that)
If it was a small party and it caused alarm in most of the guests and staff, I can totally see why her parents reacted so harshly...
Although I do believe no matter what, FH's Grandfather should be invited to the wedding...(keep in mind that one day he will not be here and you don't want your FH to regret not having him there and or possibly resenting the fact that your family pressured him into deciding that) but should definitely be forbidden to drink and someone other than FH's mother should be asked to keep an eye on him.
Hope everything works out!!!!!

I'm so sorry to hear this! I feel so bad for you. I hate dealing with family problems like this. If you can talk to your parents I would try and tell them if they can't forget just to forgive for now for your guy's sake right now.

Re: Will it never end! VENT and UPSET
Thank you sage - I told FH then bring him to the ceremony - but FH is tired of his family doing this - his Father is harassing us about the wedding as it is - making digs at me. FMIL is a pain and is always causing problems. See I think the issue is - FBIL will NOT watch grandpa - he had to FALL for him to come across the room and HELP us with him (he is BM) and I think the problem was that he was forbidden to drink in the first place but he gets loud and starts making a scene when he doesn't get his wine. What kind of a place is this...FH said it totally ruined his e-party and he is terrified of how his family will ruin our wedding in some way...so if he had his way NONE of them would be invited.

Ugh...So sorry Hon!!! This mess just keeps getting worse doesn't it???? Definitely not a good thing if Grandpa gets belligerent if he doesn't get his wine....making a scene!!! NOT what you need on your wedding day....
Whatever you guys decide...let your FH know you will support his decision. I think it's a good compromise to just have him at the ceremony..... Maybe another family member can drive him home after???

I am so sorry this happened to you. Hopefully in time your parents will calm down from being so upset over what FH's grandfather did. I really don't think he should be banned from the wedding. He is family.Perhaps you can ask FH to have someone else at his table to make sure he doesn't have much to drink at your wedding and also warn the waiter to water his drinks down. I'm sure FH's grandfather is mortified of his behavior and will be very careful from now on. Could FH's mom be right? Maybe his drinks combined with his medication made him this way. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

Re: Will it never end! VENT and UPSET
I am so sorry to hear that your party was ruined in this way. I completely understand how FI feels. My DH has an adult cousin who causes a scene at every single family event, whether it is a wedding, funeral or anything else. She will either start a loud argument with another family member or she will pretend to be ill (nothing wrong with this woman except in the head!!!). She has even gone as far as to pretend to faint and then demand an ambulance be called. That little scene caused about an hour of commotion in the middle of DH's other cousin's wedding. She just has to be the center of attention and when she isn't this is her way of getting it. That sounds like your FMIL may have that same problem.
DH is so embarrased by her that he tried to keep me from family events so I wouldn't meet her when we were dating. She was banned from our wedding even though DH aunt pleaded to let her come. We even had the maitre'd inform all the staff at our wedding that if this woman showed up she was not allowed in. Fortunately she didn't. She won't speak to us now (oh how awful ) and there are several other family members who have also banned her from family events.
Hang in there. Perhaps you can speak to the staff at your reception hall and instruct them not to serve Grandpa any alcohol. Is there another family member in DH family who would be willing to keep an eye on him for you? Can DH talk to Grandpa and let him know that he is worried about him doing this at the wedding? Good luck.
my dad got drunk at my wedding...and only my mom, sister and I knew...and we were upset...b/c he is not supposed to drink...during our dance...HE REEKED!!! the next morning he asked my sister if he made a fool of himself...thankfully he didn't...but he could not remember the wedding :EMO02:
so at my sister's wedding I told the maitre d to water down any drinks that my father got..DH did this at BIL's Bachelor Party as well (gave the bartender $20)...maybe you could handle the wedding and his grandfather this way?

I'm sorry this had to happen to you. That really stinks and is really selfish behavior on part of the grandfather and your FMIL. However- you need to tell your parents that you are marrying FH and NOT his mom and/or grandfather. If your parents want to complain- they should call up your FMIL directly and tell her that grandfather is banned from the wedding- they shouldn't put you in the middle of it. You have a wedding to plan and it is stressful enough without them bothering you about this.

Re: Will it never end! VENT and UPSET
Im so sorry that happened, and I realize why it would be a bad idea to have him at the wedding, luckily you'll have your own photographer so his mother cant mess up the pictures... And I dont think it would be bad for him to be at the ceremony(since thats the important part and there is no alcohol there)
