Wine
As a house warming gift I bought my friend wine glasses and wine charms, and I'd like to get her a bottle of wine to go with them. She loves Merlot, but I'm not much of a red wine drinker so I don't have much expertise on the subject. Can anyone recommend a really good Merlot? Thanks!

Re: Wine
My favorite reasonably priced merlot - Columbia CrestMy favorite, more expensive, I-just-passed-the-bar-exam merlot - Markham
My favorite wine bar merlot - Bamarito ( I think that is what it is called. I have been calling it Vinny Barbarino for so long, that I am not sure anymore
)

Re: Wine
here's a pricey one but its great:Sterling Vineyards 1998 Reserve Merlot (list price $70 but we just got a case for $10/bottle!!)
a much less expensive option - Ravenswood Merlot Napa Valley 1998
its at BevMo.com for $18.99.
You could also go with the Ravenswood Vinters Blend Merlot, which is under $10 and also a nice wine.

Re: Wine
My favorite is Kendall Jackson - for both merlot and chardonnay. They're not too pricey either

Re: Wine
What's a good red wine to get that's sweet, but not overly sweet (does that make sense?)?

Re: Wine
Try Bogle. It's a California wine...very reasonably priced, but delicious. I think Wine Spectator gives it about an 89 rating.

Re: 'sweet but not too sweet' red wines
Are you looking for a dessert wine or something to go with food? One of my all-time favorites is a Pinot Noir. It's not heavy like a Cab or Merlot, it's got lots of fruit flavor, and it goes with all sorts of food! Zinfandel is also a fun wine...more 'spicy' than sweet, with tastes more along the lines of blackberries, but still not heavy. Or if you want a really light wine that runs more to sweeter tastes, try Beaujolais. The Beaujolais Nouveau just came out at the end of November, and it's pretty good this year (and cheap, too). Hope this was helpful!

Rabbit Ridge. It's hard to find on Long Island, but it's only about $17 a bottle, just the right amount of sweet 'but not too sweet'
