With gas prices so expensive...

...anyone considering finding alternative means of transportation? Getting rid of the car? Taking public transportation?

Just wondering...

Right now, I take the bus and train to work, so that doesn't affect me, and my husband is a 5 min. drive from his job. We might be moving to Suffolk in November, so I hope they're down by then! I would still be taking a train, but my husband would be driving to Queens.

FH and I commute about 3 days per week. It saves us about 35-40 miles per day. He works about 5 miles from me.

Would your husband consider walking?

To be honest, I don't think gas prices are going to go down and I kind of hope that they don't in a way.

I am not working now (again) so I don't drive much.

Saturday night, DH and I walked to TGIFriday's near us (about a mile and a half away, maybe)

I wish there were more places to walk to.

Please explain why you don't want them to go down.

At the moment I work 5 minutes from home, so it isn't so bad for me. Soon I'm moving out east and my commute will be 40 minutes so I pray gas goes down by then! FH drives from here (Suffolk) to Queens every other day for work, so he is thinking of getting a hybrid when his current lease is up. He still has a while though and he is way over the alotted miles, so we'll see......

Because natural resources are not going to last forever and I think that people take them for granted. It seems that the only reason people consider conserving gas is because it's so expensive...so if that's the way it's gotta be...

A liter of gas in Europe is twice as much as a gallon of gas in the states - it's why many people over here drive smaller, more efficient vehicles. The SUV trend has put a major dent in oil reserves.

That's great Sharon!!! I can't wait to get a bike! Right now I take the bus to work, but once we get out of our current apartment and have a place to put a bike I'm getting one.

I agree - but I also feel that a certain burden should be placed on the government to develop alternative means of transportation - like hybrid cars (as well as alternative means of energy in general - solar, wind, hydro) or at least provide financial incentives for companies to develop this technology. Funds that are spent finding new oil supplies could be better spent developing alternative technologies. jmho.

Do a lot of people ride bikes in London? I hate when I see people riding bikes in Manhattan.

DH isn't far from work & he could take the train to the town he works in, but then he is too far from the hospital to walk. There may be soem sort of shuttle bus , but it isn't really practical.

My MIL works very close to home & doesn't walk--ever. She complains she has too many books to carry. It drives me crazy.

my dh is taking the train in...which is free for him anyway....so yeah!!!!
the $$ that we are saving on his gas is going towards my gas.

I heart the NYC subways and wish there was some equivalent out here (western suffolk).

I thought about carpooling with someone but I'm too lazy

Re: With gas prices so expensive...

it's only about a $10 difference for me to fill my car up- I don't really think it's going to change the way I feel about driving-
( 14 gallon tank x .80 more a gallon)

from what I saw today- the prices seem to be coming down

Will is trying deparately to get rid of his pick-up so that we can buy a Prius. My car gets about 33 MPG, so I am pretty OK for now, but I would love to have a hybrid. Also, DH & I have begun commuting together & DH is looking for a job closer to our house.
