With Poll: Buffet or Sit-Down?

With Poll: Buffet or Sit-Down?

I am pretty sure that having a buffet dinner instead of a sit down could save us some money. Anyone having one? Can I expect to save a lot or not to noticable of a savings? I've only been to a few buffet weddings, but enjoyed them a lot, there is so much more food varieties choose from. Which do you ladies like better?
Thanks.

We actually asked this question and many places told us the price isnt very different...but we also wanted a sit down. So we didnt ask the price of buffet

ETA:I prefer sit down only b/c I hate the line

Prefer sit down for formal affair. We had a sit down. I think most guests would prefer a sit down meal.

when i was looking into that there were only savings about 5-7$ per person. not enough savings for me so i did sit down.

We are having a sit down...we feel its more formal!

I went to a wedding that was a Buffet, and it wasnt terrible but the line was out the door...we felt that we spent too much time waiting on line...and It was actually a small affair...maybe 100 people...

Hope that helps!

i prefer a sit down dinner, but you should do what's in your budget. if it's only a matter of a few dollars per person, i'd probably opt for the sit down though.

I think it depends on the time of day; if it is an evening affair, sit down is expected. If it is a brunch/lunch time reception, then I think buffet might be better. JMO

sit-down....I always spill something on myself if I have to carry a plate (and to think I used to waitress! )

We are having a sit down because I think it is more formal. I agree with you about the variety though and I've been to both. I think wedding size also matters a bit because you don't want people to wait on a long line.

I am having a sit down dinner - I feel it is more formal as others have said. But, I think for an afternoon wedding it is fine. My cousin had a buffet for her day wedding and I thought it was really nice. It just has a more casual feel..so it depends on what type of atmosphere you are going for.

My brother is food & beverage manager at a Country Club. He has told me that he never understands why buffet is cheaper because you have to prepare more food than for a sit-down dinner since guests tend to eat more at a buffet when they can just keep getting up and refilling their plate. His buffet is cheaper than sit-down (but then again his prices are low to begin with).

That said, if buffet is what you can afford go for it, but seriously compare prices at multiple locations.

Another thing to consider is the time of day for your wedding. For an evening wedding guests generally expect a sit-down dinner. For an afternoon affair that will serve food at 3 PM, a buffet is more than sufficient.

I found a way around that. instead of having one table with one line we are doing stations. That way peope can move about, and pick and choose what they want.

we are having buffet bc its $20 cheaper than the sit down menu at atlantis. our buffet line goes through the shark tank tunnel, so i think people won't mind waiting on it too much. if you have more than 100 guests they set up 2 stations. it will give our guests more options than a sit down dinner would, so we don't mind it. ~lacey

We are also doing a buffet, but we have a very small intimate group. And there is also going to be stations. A carving station for the carved prime rib, pasta station, one for the seafood newburg, and one for the chicken Julia. Each table of six people is going to be called up separately, so I don't feel a line will be an issue. As far as cost, it was about the same as a sit down, but we chose buffet because there will be a bigger selection of food for the guests. We wanted a more social occasion, so the wedding planner suggested the buffet, it lasts longer than a sit down. Since we are just having family and very close friends it will be perfect for us.

Sit-down to me is more elegant.

Re: With Poll: Buffet or Sit-Down?

we did a buffet... we had a smaller wedding ( about 125 people. we mostly did it to give people more variety and more food- the caterer we went to does mostly all buffets, so they were very good about not having the line too long. and our guests loved it because they got a ton of food and could try a little bit of each of the main dishes- our best man was on a first name basis with the steak carver by the end of the night
it was an evening wedding, but we wanted a slightly more casual feel, so the buffet was great for us its really personal preference.
