Women who married a man in uniform?

My FH is in the police academy and I am so proud of him. I just want to know if does it get better. Because latly he has been studing so much and then I feed him, then he goes to bed. I get bored waiting for him to be done so by the time he's done I'm ready to go to bed. I know it's going to be hard but should I not pay to much attention to it. I feel like he's actually going to forget my birthday which is August 4th. Please tell me how you felt throughout the whole academy experience and afterwards?

Thank you

Well I am not dating a police officer BUT my brother is on the NYPD..the academy is an intense time and I know it was hard for his girlfriend ESPECIALLY SINCE he started the academy in July 2001 and then 2 months later 9/11 happened...His schedule has definetely improved since becoming a Cop

Don't worry just support him..its a hard time for him

As an Ex-cop who is engaged to a current cop (NYPD) it DOES get 'better'. I say better in quotes b/c it is not a peachy time by any means, but easier than the academy (no studying, no gym, etc). He may have a differnt schedule than you, as do FH and I now-he works Tu-Sa 5:30pm-2am I work M-F 8am -5:30pm and we DON'T live together. FH's brother graduated the academy this past Jan, he's been flip flopping 1 week 8pm-4am the next 12pm-8pm. His wife had a tough time adjusting to that.

Know that there are a NUMBER of ladies on here in the same situation. Another one to chat with is Gina (gina674) she is a cop (and a sweetheart, gem of a gal!! ).

We're all here for each other to lend support, lend an ear, lend a shoulder to cry on, whatever is needed!!! to you and Congrats to you FH!!!

My FH is a Marine and we have dealt with being apart ALOT. He was away for the first 2 yearsof our relationship for the most part and then he has been to various training and was deployed to Kuwait for 6 months

He is finally getting out in about 3 weeks and I couldnt be happier. I know it is different with the PD but you do learn how to deal with it much better with time

FI is a police officer, and it will get better. The academy is a really rough time for them (and you) it takes some time to adjust. It's going to be hard, and even when he gets out on the streets he is going to be a rookie with a 'not so great' sched. but it gets better

My FH is a cop also and it does get better, but it does take a lot of time. One day at a time. Right now my FH is studing for his sargents test in January so it brings back a lot of memories of the academy. It stinks that we have no time together right now but I know that this is the best thing for our future. I am so proud of him!

FH works in Brooklyn. The academy was the worst studying, training, running..he was beat all the time never wanted to do anything. He loves his job and is now working the midnight shift until 8am. It is very hard and he is still always wanting to sleep and relax. The job is tough and as long as you two compromise on things YES it gets better. I love my FH so much and he takes his job very serious so I want him to be the best PO he can be. He is studying for the sergeants exam and reads on and off. I would encourage you to have a close relationship with family and friends. FH is always working..Holidays, B-day, weddings. It is hard but you both will get though it and enjoy a wonderful life together....PLEASE BUY the book 'I LOVE A COP' it is wonderful reading for a cops wife or girlfriend..It really helps you understand what they go through...GOOD LUCK!! FM me if you need anything anytime...If you want to borrow my copy of the book let me know.
GOOD LUCK!!!

FH was supposed to go to the academy in July, but will be going into the Jan class instead. They have a lot of work to do, so try to be patient as to not stress him out more. He won't forget about you, he just has a lot of work to do.

My Marine is out in October if he doesn't sign that damn contract to re-enlist I cant't deal with it anymore. Lenny was in Iraq for 9 months I lost hair, sleep, and even teeth, (yes I had 3 teeth crack and needed crowns from the stress) and now he feels he has to re enlist so that he can take care of me.

Re: Women who married a man in uniform?

Ladies your words have been absolutly inspiring and helpful to me. I thanks you. I was crying so much last night just because I love him but all I wanted was a hug. I chated with him. I told him it's not his fault that I am very proud of him but also that when it came to be intamate he was tired or I was to tired to wait to go to the room because he was studying. We have understanding on both sides now. Last night when I went to bed he held me in his arms so that I can fall asleep peacefully. It makes me want to cry now that he did that, it was so sweet.

I will get that book 'I Love a Cop' I think it would be great to read.

Thank you ladies so much. I can't believe how many are you that has or is a cop. LOL!

I will get that book 'I Love a Cop' I think it would be great to read.

i love that book - it taught me so much about myself as i am the daughter of a cop as well as a fiance of one.

i agree with everyone - the only thing i do have to say is that the academy is the worst of it all (IMO). so - just let him go through it and just be there. i just put no demands on him. i travelled to HIS house every single weekend and didn't complain till AFTER he graduated. he wasn't around for my birthday that year - i didn't say one word.

there are people who don't make it and if you are truly there for him and just understand how hard and scary it is - you guys will do fine. it sounds like you really care about making sure he feels your love and concern - and that's awesome.

once he gets out it'll be tough sometimes with schedules and people who don't understand. i have found some friends don't get it that i want to spend a weekend with FH alone.

otherwise, i just treat him the same as i would anyone else - i guess living with my dad all these years taught me to take in stride - he won't be there for all your outings or birthdays but what he is doing is super important and above all, you are making a sacrafice to better our community too!

Veronica, hang in there. FH is a Cop and the one thing that I have learned is to be flexible with the crazy hours and his schedule changing all of the time. Enjoy the time you have together now. It will definitely get better.

Oh Jill!!!! You are too kind..

I was in the July 2001 class, and then 2 months later 9/11 happened... I worked the 8x4 tour one week, and the 4x12 tour the next. I flip flopped for 13 months (FTU was the same thing).... Boy was that not easy for me and FH.... He has been by my side since college when I knew I wanted to become a cop. So he knew what he was in for... I barely got to see him, and forget about the holidays when you have no time on... Even if you have off, you get Over time to work... It still happens, but now its easier to deal with.... Now, I'm in my 5th year, and I have been doing steady midnights for 3 1/2 years... I went from the flip flopping to doing 12x8..... It easier for me, b/c FH and I have been living together now for 3 years, and he works 8-5, and I sleep during that time, and spend time together when he gets home.... I don't sleep much. If I get 5 hours a day, that's a good day.

We have adjusted, somewhat. But he knows I love what I do, and I sacrafice sleep for spending time with him and my family... I have 15 more years then I can sleep all I want!!

My academy class was over 9 months long, unlike the classes now... It does get easier, but be patient with him, especially when it comes to remembering important dates... I remember things, but with my schedule sometimes, it goes right out of my head... And as for the intimacy.... It does suffer, but the time you do get to spend together, is worth all that lost time!!!!

Just like Jill (MsKitty1274) said.. We are all here for one another, call on us if it gets hard, we understand!!!!

Re: Women who married a man in uniform?

Hi!

My FH works in Brooklyn N..the 7-3. Brownsville/Ocean Hill./ It is a really bad precinct. I know they are all tough and I just always pray he makes it home OK. He is very smart and always wanted to do this so I give him credit. I love him to death and will stand by his side no matter what.
Hang in there and just make the time you spend together special.
FH works the midnights too...(12-8) and comes home sleeps and is up for dinner and a little chit chat and it is off to do the same thing. He works 5 days on 3 days off 5 days on 2 days off. It is good cause when school starts again and I am teaching I can see him in the evenings.
Again Good Luck!! We all understand what you are going through. We should start a cop's wives club.

Re: Women who married a man in uniform?

My ex fiancee is in NYPD and I was with him while he was in the academy. It's a tough time and even after he graduates it's not much better because they stick them on the 'rookie shift' which tends to be either 12am - 8am or even worse, 8pm to 4am. I dealt with that, but considering I come from a family full of cops, (and my brother was going through the acedemy the same time as him) I was used to it.

My father retired after 9/11 after 35 years in the NYPD out of Sheepshead Bay.

My oldest brother works in Canarsie, a craphole of an area now.

My sister in law works in transit out of Coney Island

My other brother also works in Brooklyn South!!!

But that doesn't sound right, East NY and Crown Heights is considered Brooklyn North (have a friend who works there)

I can't stress what Jill said enough.....my situation is just the opposite of yours. I am the cop (5 years with NYPD --South Bronx--midnights) and FH is constantly upset and stressed about me, my job, our lives, etc... It definitely gets 'better' after the academy, but it will always be stressful. The academy is definitely the worst part of the process.

BUT, when he graduates, you will need to keep on top of him to make sure he doesn't fall into the trap of work, sleep, work, sleep, work, sleep......you need to make sure he finds time for family and friends. There are many guys who are constantly fighting with their wives b/c all they ever do is sleep when they get home....the wives cook, clean, take care of the kids, etc with no help from their husbands.....Yes, the stress of the job does a lot to our bodies, and there are some weeks where the only things we see are the patrol cars and our beds but when there is no outside 'life', this is when marriages begin to fail.

So, continue to be supportive, listen, and try not to 'push' him too hard during those times.....and make sure you enjoy every minute with him when he is fully available emotionally and physically....b/c those times are sometimes rare. Use those days to do silly things together, grab a bite to eat, enjoy the sunset, and do the little things we forget to do after being together for so long. Even if you are upset with him, or you're fighting over some little thing, when you see he has two or three days off.....use the time together wisely.

Make sure you keep the lines of communication fully open.....although office affairs are common, infidelity among cops, firefighters, and other high-stress civil service work is rampent. As long as you and FH have a very open and honest relationship.....your marriage will survive the odds. Don't harp on him about going 'out with the guys' once a week for a drink or two and expect that there will be some 'cop functions' that he will attend without you. FH knows that this is part of the 'job' and has come to accept it....I tell him exactly where I am and who I am with--and let him know what time I'll be home around. Even if it's 5 in the morning....he trusts me implicitly and you should continue to trust your FH as long as he gives you reason to. His personality will probably change, his habits at home will probably change.....and it's a very big adjustment to go through.....but it CAN be done. Just make sure you continue to talk to him and he does the same.

Those are my suggestions....as Jill and Gina said---we are all here to listen, support, and help you as much as we can.....each of us with our own perspective on the job (mine, Jill's, and Gina's are first-hand)....and there are many other 'cop wives' on this board who can lend an ear--who may or may not know the 'in's and out's' of the job. (I personally feel that sometimes it's better for the wives -or husbands-not to know everything)....but that's JMO.

Congrats and best of luck......it will get 'better'--we promise.

Re: Women who married a man in uniform?

moosey -
that was a great description of your life! and i really apprecaited it (even tho this wasn't my topic!).

i especially agree about the 'going out with the guys/gals' comment - since FH and i don't live in the same state, I am always encouraging him to go out 'for a drink' and when he and his friends do get together (they do a 'lousy days off' party)...I'm all for it.

And i agree it is sooo important to make sure that they get out there and do stuff. right now is tough cause everyone is going to the beach on the weekends and FH is stuck riding the trains in polyester! So you have to plan. I usually take a few days off during the week almost every month if i can do it just so that we can do 'normal couple' things.

This was such a good topic!
