Women who married a man in uniform?

Original post by idovig

My FH is in the police academy and I am so proud of him. I just want to know if does it get better. Because latly he has been studing so much and then I feed him, then he goes to bed. I get bored waiting for him to be done so by the time he's done I'm ready to go to bed. I know it's going to be hard but should I not pay to much attention to it. I feel like he's actually going to forget my birthday which is August 4th. Please tell me how you felt throughout the whole academy experience and afterwards?

Thank you

that was a great description of your life! and i really apprecaited it (even tho this wasn't my topic!).

i especially agree about the 'going out with the guys/gals' comment - since FH and i don't live in the same state, I am always encouraging him to go out 'for a drink' and when he and his friends do get together (they do a 'lousy days off' party)...I'm all for it.

And i agree it is sooo important to make sure that they get out there and do stuff. right now is tough cause everyone is going to the beach on the weekends and FH is stuck riding the trains in polyester! So you have to plan. I usually take a few days off during the week almost every month if i can do it just so that we can do 'normal couple' things.

This was such a good topic!

welcome.... Must be even tougher living in different states!! Ouch!! But, as long as people keep communicating, I think any relationship can stand the test of seperation and stress. Good luck!!

My FH is a Marine and we have dealt with being apart ALOT. He was away for the first 2 yearsof our relationship for the most part and then he has been to various training and was deployed to Kuwait for 6 months

He is finally getting out in about 3 weeks and I couldnt be happier. I know it is different with the PD but you do learn how to deal with it much better with time

My Marine is out in October if he doesn't sign that damn contract to re-enlist I cant't deal with it anymore. Lenny was in Iraq for 9 months I lost hair, sleep, and even teeth, (yes I had 3 teeth crack and needed crowns from the stress) and now he feels he has to re enlist so that he can take care of me.

not to hijack this thread, but my brother JUSt got out of the Corps in July- he was sent to Iraq TWICE (9 & 8 month tours) and is having a hard time readjusting. he is 'threatening' to re-enlist if he doesn't get into the fire dept.- I read my bro the riot act just last night.

it's one this if you guy wants to do his full 20, but after the first 4 years, he gets nothing more for staying in...MAYBE a few signing bonuses, but he can take care of you just as well or BETTER if he uses the GI bill to go to school and/or his training to pursue a non-militart career. if he doesn't want to do it for life, he is just putting off starting his new one. of course this is JMVeryHumbleO- but like I said, I was just discussing this very issue with my brother last night, so I'm a little sensitive. i couldn't handle seeing him go back to Iraq a third time- I feel there is a point when you are tempting fate just a little too much.

where is your Fh stationed?

Just keep in mind that once he graduates he might get a really $hitty shift...My friend just graduated in the (I want to say January) but I don't remember class, and he's working a terrible shift in a terrible neighborhood. he does the late shift, in Brownsville....

Very true. You learn to communicate when all you do is talk on the phone. FH jokes that he'll never call me again once we are living together!!! Sometimes we want to smash the phone...But thanks again for that message!

My ex fiancee is in NYPD and I was with him while he was in the academy. It's a tough time and even after he graduates it's not much better because they stick them on the 'rookie shift' which tends to be either 12am - 8am or even worse, 8pm to 4am. I dealt with that, but considering I come from a family full of cops, (and my brother was going through the acedemy the same time as him) I was used to it.

My father retired after 9/11 after 35 years in the NYPD out of Sheepshead Bay.

My oldest brother works in Canarsie, a craphole of an area now.

My sister in law works in transit out of Coney Island

My other brother also works in Brooklyn South!!!

But that doesn't sound right, East NY and Crown Heights is considered Brooklyn North (have a friend who works there)

Sorry I wrote FI works in Brooklyn South, East NY....I meant Brooklyn North..
