I have been using the tredmil but im bored of it ... i know i have to do a lot of cardio.... i have been shying away from the weight machines because im scared of bulking up. Re: work out routine
You def need to do a combo of strength and cardio exercises. That is what burns the most calories and fat. You would not bulk up.
Since you want to lose a good amount, I would suggest making an appointment with a trainer at your gym. They can help you set up a routine that you can follow to achieve your goal. Even if you meet with them only once, they can give you a set plan.
The other advice I keep hearing is to do the strength training first, followed by cardio to burn the most fat.

Re: work out routine
How about doing intervals with the treadmill and elliptical machine? Also, you wont bulk up using the weights. It actually helps you burn fat along with cardio, so you will be losing weight and getting tone. HTH

Re: work out routine
To lose 40lbs you have to have a strict diet to follow. All the exercise in the world wont help unless you have a good diet. If you are following a healthy eating routine then all you have to do is some cardio and then add in light weights. You won't bulk up from light weights.
But losing weight is mostly diet not exercise.

Re: work out routine
I would do lots so of cardio .. alternate cardio and weights... does your gym offer classes? I know that at NYSC they have awesome ones, like total body conditioning or club strength which would be really good for you to do

Re: work out routine
Light weights will tone your muscles. Also, stronger muscles burn more calories throughout the day, so you'll be burning more calories in the longrun from getting stronger!

Re: work out routine
Like everyone else has already said, you need to do cardio and strenghth training together to burn fat the fastest. Also, switch up your cardio so you and your body dont get bored. Its starting to get nice out so try walking or running in the park, rollerblading, biking, etc.

Same here...in Bayshore. I miss having classes...I used to go to Fitness Incentive in Babylon and they had AWESOME classes...but $120/year compared to $750/year is no comparison when your saving for a wedding!

I think you should def. mix up your cardio routine. The planet fitness I go to has a cardio machine that looks like you are skiing when you are on it. Don't be intimidated by it because it is an awesome machine! What I have been doing (because I get bored with the treadmill too) is doing 30 mins on the treadmill then 30 mins on the other machine (it is not the elliptical). Then once I am done with my cardio I do the weight machines. You can either do the 30 minute Circuit Training or do the individual machines. Don't put a lot of weight on the machines....only do between 10-30 lbs. depending on the muscle you are working. I also suggest not to do the leg machines. You are using your legs soo much with the cardio that you should focus on your upper body, arms and abs with the machines.

Re: work out routine
When I started a major workout routine back in 05- I was trying to lose 40 LBS. I did it within 3 months but it was a lot of hard work. Here's what I did.
5 days a week- straight cardio for 45 minutes per day.
Everday, I did weights. One day, it was arms. Another day it was legs and abs. Then I would alternate. My schedule was something like this:
Monday: Elliptical 30 minutes, treadmill 15 on an incline at 4.0. Arms.
Tuesday: Same cardio, legs and abs.
Weds. Same as Monday.
Thursday: Same as Tuesday.
Friday: Same as Weds.
And that is basically it.
Then, I made sure to eat high protein low carbs. If I had any carbs, it was nothing but high fiber whole grain breads, rice and other carbs.
Once I lost the weight, it was easy to maintain. Hard work pays off in the end.
You can do it! Remember that!
Oh and PS: To make sure that you do not bulk up, lets say you do an arm extension (a machine I use to tone arms) Set the weights at 20 lbs and do 30 reps 3 times. Same thing with leg exercises. Pick a comfortable weight and do lifts- approx 30 times, 3 reps.

Re: work out routine
Try sparkspeople.com... I love this website! You can track your nutirition, plan our meals, track your exercise, and plan out exercise plans.
I don't use this website anymore because it is very addicting, but this is what I do.
300 calories on the bike
lift arm/legs (depending on the day)
300 calories on the eliptical
lift arms/legs and stomach.
Strength training will not make you bulk up. The key is lots of reps with smaller weights. It's the large weights which make you bulk. This will just tone you up which will make it easier to exercise longer, and create muscles which will show when you shed the weight.
